Replacing an Ulka pump

Priming the pump is mainly about filling the entire line leading up to the pump with water. Vibratory pumps don't have much draw with air in the line. I would try carefully pouring some water into the line with it raised above pump level (or maybe using a dropper/baster). It should be just a matter ...

Specific trouble with latte art

Now, I'm not going to say I'm a latte art expert. However, I have spent a lot of time working on latte art mechanics and theory, and I try to pour a rosetta almost every day. So I hope I can help! See if these suggestions make sense. I see three problems: centering, milk texture, and

Why I prefer doserless grinders (yet another Mazzer mod)

Is the case cast aluminum? For some reason I thought it was steel or iron

Why I prefer doserless grinders (yet another Mazzer mod)

Magnets! Seriously, I think magnets would be perfect. Isn't that part of the grinder magnetic?

Lelit PL041 odd problem with second shot

You are drying out the portafilter in between shots, right? If not, that might be a nice quick fix. As a fellow Le'lit user, I have never had a good shot with leakage around the seal. If I don't tighten down the portafilter enough and water spurts out the sides, then I just give up and try again

My New Mazzer Mini Has Arrived!

Congratulations! That's a nice price for a new Mini, and I'm sure you will immediately notice a huge increase in your espresso quality. Yes, the grinder should be very quiet when run empty - just a hum from the motor. I thought that older model Minis stopped being produced before '08, but maybe I'm ...

Broken adjustment pin on Mazzer Super Jolly, burrs not spinning

One the topic of removing broken screws... I've had good luck with attaching a new shaft to a broken head. Put a tiny dab of epoxy or superglue on the head of a small nail and then glue it to the stuck bit. You can then unscrew both with pliers. Of course, be extremely careful not

Do barista competitors understand the grinder? Do you?

How consistent is each wedge of a dosing vane? On Mazzers, the vane height is "infinitely" adjustable since it is an unmarked screw mechanism. What do you think the variances are from wedge to wedge and from full doser to low doser? Is there a significant variance from fluffiness? Seriously, if all ...

About 3-way Solenoid Valve Operation

Well, I have been hitting the gym a lot recently. The fact that ~500lbs of force is applied to the puck also reinforces why even distribution is so important. I don't have experience with rotary pumps, but Ulka vibratory pumps definitely follow a flow-pressure curve. This chart is straight from "the...
