Is there such a thing as too much head space in a lever machine?

Your theories are all great... when dealing with pump machines. Just try what I say - I have a europiccola I use daily. I grind 14.2g in a porlex hand grinder. Throw it in the double basket, tap on the counter a couple times and LEVEL, not tamp. You require 7mm (or 9mm - can't remember) to sit even ...

Is there such a thing as too much head space in a lever machine?

Yes. I use no head space. Final tamp being done by the head. If there is no room for the coffee to move, how can it be disturbed when lifting the lever?

Gaggia Orione buyer with many questions

Get it and worry about Fixing it once you have it. I was super worried when I grabbed my first one, but Doug at Orphan was a huge help in letting me know there are still tons of parts readily available for this machine. Shamefully, I still haven't finished my rebuild

Having trouble keeping my lever up... :) after restoration. w/pics

Are we talking while the machine is on or off? If on, the only way it will stay up with your hands not on it, is if it has a basket with coffee in the portafilter installed just before a pull. If off, why would you want it to stay up?

Gaggia Tell restoration

Márcio, My single boiler has those same "hairline" fractures in the weld/solder. They do not go through though. They are there because all of the weight of the boiler is on that neck and connected only with the two flat head bolts to the frame. I've contemplated fabbing something up to sit underneat...

Gaggia Orione gasket stack

I thought of that, but the original design and stack only uses one seal, not two like say the LaPav. {image}

Gaggia Orione gasket stack

The more I think about, I bet they did it like this because they have those brass v ring spreaders on hand and didn't want to machine anything

Gaggia Tell restoration

I'm pretty sure this model is actually a Gaggia Tell, which may explain why some things seem different - like the frame, knobs, and boiler
