Espresso equipment reviews in 2011 [preview]

I'm into the grinders. Quality in the cup, retention, ease of cleaning, and how they compare to others at a similar price point, i.e. La Cimbali hybrid, etc. -glad you're doing this

Grinding in College - buy small or save for next step up?

Grouphead looks like it needs a major dose of urnex. I believe 4 barrel has a slayer machine, which uses adjustable pressure profiling. Love the insignia on your machine. Good Luck

Grinding in College - buy small or save for next step up?

Also check out Local 123, a cafe on San Pablo just off University. I've seen good things written about them. I believe they carry Flying Goat, Verve, and maybe 1 or 2 others. Here's a link to an article about them- {link}

La Marzocco's Formula 1 Entry: Strada with pressure profiling!

Funny, I thought about posting to this thread last night. I ran across this, because I was curious about the 'Strada' as I had noticed it at Verve on Thursday. I was unaware of any buzz about the machine until I googled it. Had a decaf macchiato, very nice. With my limited palate I still picked up '...

Neat looking illy machine

I think the iper system is a big step up over ese pods, which I am not a fan of. As stated earlier, not many offerings by Illy- dark, medium, decaf, and lungo. I asked the reps if there would be other blends, they replied that there is only one blend, just different roast/grind. Nespresso (which I l...

How to: Clean out the Le'Lit PL53 Grinder

Great post Tristan, very helpful. For those who don't wish to take the '53' apart, simply (ha) turn the adjustment knob many times (keep count) to open up the burrs (for a coarser grind), then run the grinder. You'll be surprised how much compacted gunk comes out. Fwiw, I find Tristan's method easie...

Does anyone on this site like or use super autos

Try a Jura. You program it to come on and go off. Only dump/clean the tray every 10 or so drinks. Cleaning is programmed every 200 or so drinks and takes about 7 minutes. Honestly just push a button and take your drink. Leave a cup underneath (optional) to catch rinse water when it goes off. Milk dr...

Does anyone on this site like or use super autos

Thanks Geoff, I had heard a rumor that the WS policy had changed, but wasn't sure. I would still ask if the 90 day warranty applies to their super autos. From what I read they could still have a warranty similar to 'lifetime'. It can't hurt to ask

Does anyone on this site like or use super autos

...and then there is the fact that what tastes like 'crap' to some, tastes quite fine or even good (gasp) to others (like me). Hmmm, use better beans? Amazing that there are people who actually like espresso that wasn't brewed at the 'perfect temp', nor mixed with 'perfect microfoam', and from a les...

Does anyone on this site like or use super autos

..and that is what I mean that the drinks aren't 'bad'. I understand that here, the HB'ers want bang for buck in terms of quality, and that super autos don't provide as rich an extraction for the money, etc. Then again not everyone wants that rich extraction or micro foam. (think of how many people ...
