Philosophy: When is a "lever" no longer a "lever"?
A compressible buffer between the input and output forces, AKA shock absorber. That doesn't have to make a difference, I'm just saying in principle it has the potential to

No, but maybe the Handpresso

Philosophy: When is a "lever" no longer a "lever"?
Sure would. Apply force on the top, exert force at the bottom ... the notion of a fluid piston doesn't give me any trouble. Liquid fluid, that is - a gas piston would introduce some novel properties. Might even be the next big thing. Imagine a gas piston - driven by an air compressing pump.

Philosophy: When is a "lever" no longer a "lever"?
A lever? That's a fine question, and you may have a good answer, or you may not. There's bound to be a variety of ways to implement a pump. But the hood is normally closed, and a car is a car because it has wheels and seats and so forth. As a lever machine is a lever

Philosophy: When is a "lever" no longer a "lever"?
In my view, if you could design something without a piston but otherwise like an ordinary lever machine, we could talk about whether it qualifies. The piston is in there just because it clarifies how the lever is used in the machine - it's the input power for a pump, that as far as we know is always a

Philosophy: When is a "lever" no longer a "lever"?
I agree about the boiler - it isn't part of the issue. Lever machine is about the implementation of brewing pressure

Philosophy: When is a "lever" no longer a "lever"?
Function isn't product, though. Function is exactly what it's about - how a lever machine functions. Cafelat Robot? Sure! Functions as a lever machine. Machines with no lever? No. They would not be able to function in the same way, whether the produce an identical product or not. Machine with an int...

Philosophy: When is a "lever" no longer a "lever"?
If you make a new machine that produces espresso shots indistinguishable from a lever machine, is it therefore a lever machine? No. If I have a spring lever espresso machine that makes terrible espresso, is it a lever machine? Yes. People may be interested in lever machines for whatever reason. What...

Philosophy: When is a "lever" no longer a "lever"?
I think we're lucky there's no need to define a boundary. If there were, the nature of the boundary would depend on what it's needed for. If we were governed by righteous curmudgeonry ... we all know very well what a lever machine is, and isn't. If we were convinced that lever machines characteristi...

Philosophy: When is a "lever" no longer a "lever"?
I'm not familiar with Meticulous, but the web page says "motorized piston." I infer that a sensible motor drive is going to use something like gear/pinion - not a lever? Otherwise I'm with you - lever means, you produce the brewing pressure by operating a lever that drives a piston. It seems to me I...
