New Slayer espresso machine
This thread is a little old, but I have some things to add because I have actually used this machine, which no one else in this thread can claim. The speculation and subsequent false assumptions are unfair, especially with regards to the claim that the machine does not offer true pressure profiling ...

Stumping Me: Verve Street Level
David, that's definitely some food for thought. I'll add some more - By my count, the first drop hits the cup in 8 seconds, which is on par with how my shots perform. Additionally, there is really no visible acceleration of flow even though pressure remains constant... In my mind, the triple basket ...

Stumping Me: Verve Street Level
Hello - Matthew from Verve here. With regards to the rationale of putting 25 grams in a double basket, there's a very good reason for it: it just tastes good, and it's not the same in a triple. Streetlevel wasn't born out of preconceived notions of unconventional extraction parameters... it just hap...

How important is tamping?
I think Ian's tamp/no tamp experiment is being taken too literally, as a tamp/no tamp dichotomy. His procedure, in my mind, reveals a more important and interesting question. It is not whether we should tamp at all, but whether or not a precise bathroom-scale-tested tamp is really necessary. Home ba...

Learning latte art with steamed soapy water [video]
Hm, instant might work - it does foam up a little (don't ask me how I know), so at a high concentration it should do the trick. For folks with a single boiler, instant coffee and soap foam could be a tremendous time saver, sparing the downtime between steam and extract. -Matt from Verve

New model Hottop KN-8828B first look
I'd like to chime in and clarify what luca was getting at: the SOP for commercial drum roasts. The hottop starts with a relatively low drop in temperature, 166F as you say. The profile then necessitates that more heat be added during the roast. Contrast this with a large drum roaster, in which the d...

Intelligentsia Tres Santos, Colombian
I'm not sure if it was the same lot, but I had a Colombian out of the Clover at Intelli Sunset Junction's opening night party - it knocked my socks off, as the barista said it would. Pristine and everything a Colombian should be

Buyer's Guide to the Quick Mill Alexia
Sure, I'm aware of the intrinsic delta between boiler temperature and group temperature... I have a Zaffiro with a TC right in the boiler. Once the machine is up and running and the group temp is stabilized, the setpoint is kept well below zero. I was just wondering if there was something about the ...
