Espresso brewing parameters for Sumatra Mandheling
Finally nailed it! 16g ground with the Jmax. Classic taper basket. 195 deg, 1:1.25 in about 26 seconds. I taste none of the notes other have previously described, but I never do. It just tastes balanced to me and doesn't remind me of anything. Your comment does make sense to me though. It's a pleasi...

Espresso brewing parameters for Sumatra Mandheling
Ok so that's timely! This morning I opened another bag of the same and pre dosed the entire thing into air right tubes. I had 14.6g left at the end, just short of my usual 16g doses. I cranked down the Jmax a couple clicks and ground the 14.6g dose into a tapered basket and pulled at 195f (90.5c). 1...

Espresso brewing parameters for Sumatra Mandheling
I was wondering the same thing so i dropped the temp to 190. Ok, that's definitely sour. Everything else has been bitter I guess. Though I will say, even with the obvious sour taste, there was still bitterness in the aftertaste. This is why I often find dialing difficult. I'm always tasting both unl...

Espresso brewing parameters for Sumatra Mandheling
Looking for some general brewing parameters/tips for this type of bean. Pulled 4 shots today without much luck. I'm terrible at deciding if a shot is sour or bitter so dialing in is always tricky for me. I've tried temps between 193, 197, 200, 203 with all shots tasting similarly bad. 16g in. Ratios...

New wave of baskets with med-dark roasts
Very first shot I pulled was nice, though perhaps a little fast. This thing is definitely higher flow than my old tapered basket. Unfortunately I ran out of my regular beans so I can't really compare apples to apples. The pucks do not come out of the Big Bang cleanly. The top half breaks off but the...

New wave of baskets with med-dark roasts
It is a straight wall but the hole size and spacing is designed to achieve the same effect as a taper, I believe. In fact, unlike a taper, which only restricts flow near the edges, the Big Bang theoretically continues to bias flow all the way to the center
