Nomad Portable Espresso Machine (Kickstarter)

I just received my Nomad (I had a black and a green model coming, so I had to wait until production was done on the black housing), and have brewed all of one shot in it. I decided to come on HB after a VERY long hiatus to see if anyone else had technique recommendations. Since I only had

Acceptable Tamper/Basket Clearance

So I've recently (two months ago) purchased a Silvia+Rocky setup from my girlfriend's dad, and have nothing but happiness from it. The one issue is the tamper. He had a nice heavy tamper which he said had been sold online as 58mm. It's got lots of room in the double basket, though, and measures with...

Mokas, Vesuvianas, and Steamtoys

Yes, that's how a moka works. I doubt the physics of water vapour would permit that kind of mass condensation: liquid water must indeed be flowing from the showerscreen of a steamtoy. However, with a moka, you use coffee a bit coarser than that for espresso, packed a lot more loosely. I'm curious to...

Mokas, Vesuvianas, and Steamtoys

Ooo . . . . I never thought of that heat dissipation. Now I'm curious . . . getting my thermometer out to measure exit temperature on my moka . . . That would definitely place a serious brew-temp difference between traditional mokas and steamtoys

Mokas, Vesuvianas, and Steamtoys

I fell in love with the moka back when I was young and naive enough to believe it was Espresso. I still enjoy my mokas on occasion -- but as a change from press coffee, not to replace my espresso. However, I've been wondering recently about what seems to be an unbroken lineage from the first steam-p...

Alternatives to the iRoast 2 (UK)

Recently, enough friends have started asking me to roast for them (and allowing me to charge enough to pay for my own coffee, assuming my time is free -- as roasting is a hobby), I decided I needed to be able to put more than a couple ounces in a batch. After considering several options for the move...

Can you identify this tool?

Yup. It's a spatula of the sort we use in lab all the time. Darn useful, though . . . I ordered some from a supply company for myself. They live with the rest of the silverware in the silverware drawer, right next to the chopsticks. *grin*

Caracolillo Coffee Mill

I figured if it was this hard to track them down, they'd be more that direction . . . 's a pity. Not that I mind doing business with Tom, of course . . . I've never had a problem with SM yet! (Who else sells their "top-scored coffee" for under six bucks a pound, just because it didn't cost

Caracolillo Coffee Mill

Does anyone have experience buying greens from "Caracolillo Coffee Mill"? I can't find much about them, but the little I have been able to turn up has been very positive. SweetMarias is my regular source, but I'm starting to roast for more friends, and the siren-call of lower prices is deafening. I ...

Home roasting equipment of choice Poll- kind of..

And might I suggest that, even in some large metropolitan areas (*ahemAugustaGAahem*), those few specialty-roasted purchases tend only to confirm that home-roasting is the only way to pull a good shot (or even a drinkable one at that)!
