Which tamper for the 18g VST filter basket
Short answer: No. The only disturbing thing is how bad the QC has been up to now. Basket inconsistency has been "the stuff of legend and frustration" for many years. IMHO, VST baskets work fine with 58.0mm tampers. They may work a little better with 58.4's. Since VST recommends a 58.4mm flat tamper,...

Extract Mojo and VST baskets, a perspective from a professional, daily user
My comments will in part mirror things Scott has already said. This is a lie, a pure, simple, deliberately manipulative lie. You did NOT ask Vince for more information; Vince did NOT ask you to break off the review and return the unit. What you DID say was this: "Hi Vince, I received the Extract Moj...

Significance of Tamper Size in Relation to Basket Size
John, thanks for the shoutout, but in truth I'm every bit as "peccable" as anyone else around here. I, too, discounted the tamper improvement out of hand at first. But after a short time, I couldn't ignore it. PLEASE NOTE, however, I switched TWO things at once: 1. 58.0mm to 58.4mm dia 2. round bottom

Versalab M3 grind adjustment set screw
Dave, please check with Versalab. The grind adjustment locking stud on my Versalab grinder (serial number 001) is 3/8" x 16. Maybe the spec has changed over time, but that would be surprising...which brings up a Versalab story: When I met John Bicht (Versalab designer) at the SCAA show I asked him w...

Which tamper for the 18g VST filter basket
Yes, I'm using a 58.4mm flat bottom tamper and it works very well with the VST filters. I prefer the results now to the shots made previously with a 58.0mm round bottom tamper. This difference greatly surprised me, but that's the way it is. YMMV

VST Filter Baskets
If I understand what you're saying, it is contrary to my experience with these baskets. As you go from the 15 to the 18 to the 22g basket, the individual holes get larger. So even if the number of holes is the same, the sum of the hole area increases. This results in faster flow. So if you dial in

Intelligentsia Black Cat: June 2011 iteration
Mail ordered some based on Jim's recommendation and I agree, it is a terrific coffee. So far I am getting big apricot flavors and rose petals, too. Great blend

La Marzocco Espresso-only Shot Brewer
No, that wouldn't work very well. The original two-boiler design uses the steam boiler to preheat brew water before it enters the brew boiler. Preheated water entering the brew boiler doesn't disrupt the boiler's temperature stability nearly as much as ambient temperature water would. In effect, tem...
