Sweet Maria's Basaltic Bourbon Blend

Thanks for the tip, Adrian. I (as others have mentioned elsewhere) was agog over the Ophiolite, and may not forgive myself for only ordering 2 pounds when I had the chance. It was the best espresso I'd consistently poured at home. You've got me putting in an order for the Basaltic now! Cheers, Paul

Holiday Wish List Gifts 2008 - Thanks Sponsors and HB

I want to add my thanks to Intelligentsia to this thread. I won the Windy City gift box and it arrived yesterday. The coffee selection is quite fine, but I'm loving the thick-lipped mug (already have one and it's my fave). However, I've fallen head over heels for the Black Cat Chocolate bar. Man, it...

Post a pic of your home espresso setup...

Snakes alive, Mary! Not only did you go whole hog, but I remember your post from last year...because of the brilliant fall colors in the yard. I'd never pay enough attention to the shot with those trees just outside. A really lovely setup! Paul

Beans getting scorched in the first couple minutes

Henry, I ran into this same problem in the past. I roast with an RK drum and it's got to be stopped to add the beans. I decided (after a few trial roasts) that I'd get fine results by dropping the beans into a cold drum. This stretches out the drying phase and makes it seem rather

Sweet Maria's DP Ethiopian Koratie

I agree that it is one special coffee, Rob. The fruit is nearly overpowering. I'm still drinking some I roasted eight days ago, and there's no citrus--just tropical fruit & blueberries. Amazing stuff. The WP is really good, too, but in a much more subtle way. Being able to cup the same coffee proces...

Good espresso I've had away from home

4 Barrel is on my list for my next trip to the City. All reviews of it have raved. Someday I'll find myself in San Jose & will be able to try Barefoot, which some say is at the top of the Bay Area list. Also check out Roma in SF on Columbus (between Stockton & Union)

Macap MXK vs. Mazzer Super Jolly vs. Cimbali Max Hybrid

Also, you should check Ebay. There are four SJs listed for under $200. Get one which isn't too dinged up (especially around the collar/burr assembly), get new burrs, and you'll be in good shape. Paul

Macap MXK vs. Mazzer Super Jolly vs. Cimbali Max Hybrid

I don't think you'll go wrong with any of those. I have an old Super Jolly, and it's a workhorse...but it doesn't have the micrometrical adjustment of the others. I also notice that the grind particle size increasingly varies as I grind more coarsely. I don't know how the others would do on a coarse...

Good espresso I've had away from home

I was in SF this past weekend and came across Roma in North Beach. It's right on Columbus...near Stockton, I think. While their roast was rather dark for my taste, there was a fine balancing sweetness & body about halfway through the shot. The cooler it got, the more subtleties came through. I wound...
