Manument Leva Machine - James Hoffman review
I'm actually in a town near the Manument folks in Germany this week and going to try one today, as this machine ticks some boxes for me - will ask about the heating system they use and also if & how the grouphead is heated. I brought some beans from Caffe Luxxe in L.A. that pull well as a ristretto

Buying regular blends for espresso use
I do it all the time - you may have trouble with excessively bright coffees, but otherwise I find I can get good espresso from single origins not necessarily roasted with that in mind regularly. Like Jim, I've also tried creating my own blends by combining SOs with some success. That said, there are...

Trish Rothgeb and Nick Cho finally opening in San Francisco
Stopped by this week, had a lovely espresso and it's an absolutely b-e-a-utilful space in a quiet neighborhood, a different vibe from the coffee experience in the Mission. But they need to keep more half and half on hand to make my usual shot and a breve!

Looking for dark espresso roast
Good Q, you're right, I don't know if he'd even sell it online. Probably wants to make very sure of dates and doesn't want to mess with heat exposure, etc. - this man is serious about his coffee, I think perhaps the most serious I've met. (I don't know of any other roasters who will not allow anyone

Looking for dark espresso roast
Fair question Phil. I actually discussed this Q with a roaster to remain unnamed and he thought it very difficult to roast and pull chocolatey, dark, sweet espresso without allowing bitterness, as compared to lightly roasting and letting the natural acidity in the beans dominate. But that's just one...

Looking for dark espresso roast
Bear Pond Espresso's Flower Child espresso, from Tokyo, certainly qualifies, but unless you're willing to pay $100/lb to get it shipped here, this may be difficult. (At current exchange rates, it's $30/lb just to buy it there in person! ) I've actually been giving this a lot of thought after my rece...

Tokyo, Japan coffee shops?
Hit Streamer again yesterday and it was even better, dark chocolate with significant sweetness, one of the best shots in recent memory, and had a nice Americano too. The staff there are also lovely and helpful and the space is very cool - will post pix when I get home, certainly a nice place to read...

Tokyo, Japan coffee shops?
Sitting at Streamer now, the espresso is worth finding. It's of the dark, smoky, chocolatey variety, but not the least bitter, and quite enjoyable. Yum. Now sipping an Americano with a Black Out donut, which is a thick chocolate bomb, super dense and lovely. Highly recommended. I'll try Bear Pond la...
