Inconsistent shot weight with newly received Niche Zero

^ this. I've been saying this for years, single dosing creates a dose which gradually gets coarser. The very first few grams will be the finest you'll get for that particular setting and then it gets coarser as the burr chamber empties and there's less load on the burr (as in it's not packed full of...

Single basket vs double basket taste differences with the same extraction yield

I've been switching between single and double baskets recently (both VST, 16g double and 7g single with the step down from 58mm to 41mm) and noticed a rather significant difference taste-wise even though the shots are pulled to the same extraction yield (roughly 23%). I always assumed that the same ...

The $2.50 WDT tool - revisited - let's see yours

Here's mine from 2007: {image} Back then I mentioned it a few times on HB and was told that it probably breaks more than it fixes and that I shouldn't be using it Btw those were also the times when I couldn't figure out why my single dosed Mazzer Major isn't producing good shots

Highest achievable espresso extraction yields

This was only a quick check to see how high it can go as taste-wise even when brewed at 20% EY it wasn't good. I've tried the same grinding method today on some Durazno from SQM London and got 22% EY with a 1:2.4 ratio (16g in) and that was very pleasant even though the extraction itself wasn't so

Highest achievable espresso extraction yields

Just got another bag of the same coffee, checked the refractometer with some distilled water and it shows 0.0, so I pulled another shot, aiming for the usual 15g / 45g, 3:1 ratio: {image} What is worth noting is how fine this coffee has to be ground to produce a fairly normally flowing shot. Usually...

Highest achievable espresso extraction yields

Hi Sam, I've measured the Kenian twice, both times I got high EY results, one was around the 25.5% mark and the other as already mentioned above 26% (I was grinding at a higher speed for this shot and had to tighten the burr gap even more to get normal flow). I've tested other coffees before this an...

Highest achievable espresso extraction yields

If you just calculate the EY using the normal, quick approach: (TDS * brew weight) / dose weight, then yes you get just a bit over 25% EY, but if you pop the numbers into VST software it returns 26.11%. The shots I did were slightly above the quoted figures in terms of dose (15.2g) and final brew we...

Highest achievable espresso extraction yields

Just curious if anyone experimented trying to push espresso shots to achieve the highest EY possible for a given coffee / ratio / dose? if anyone knows of any professionals who's tried this and can share some data it would be much appreciated. Wondering if the EY plateaus at some point or will it in...
