Straight espresso and milk based coffee suggestions

That's the characteristic taste of Starbucks. Over-roasted and stale coffee with rancid oils. Clover brewed coffee is absolutely wonderful if high quality coffee is put in and the brewing parameters are properly calibrated

Canadian Roasters: Canucks...What are you drinking?

For me my main roasters are: {link} - the best, very well done light roasts with developed sweetness and aroma. {link} - big variety, tends to roast a little bit darker than Transcend. Most of the SOs work as espresso {link} tastes like good Italian imports but is roasted in Ontario

AP: Caffeine in coffee vs. tea and chocolate

Wow, that's harsh and unfair. Caffeine inhibits cell plate formation in dividing plant cells {link} that should be common knowledge. Also, funny you're not skeptical of the fungicidal effects of caffeine based on the objection you have against claiming phytotoxic effects, fungi don't have nervous sy...

Testing temperature of Zojirushi water boiler

I use a Zojirushi for brewing tea too, mine is a different model (CD-JUC22) but I guess it's similar... What I find I need to do is to flush some water in a waste water container before dispensing water to use. If I don't do that the water is much too low temperature to use, and my tea tastes

Cuban coffee

There's Cuban coffee available from Terra Cafe in Montreal {link} I haven't tried them since I don't home roast and they're quite far to be ordering roasted coffee, but it's something I've been curious about for a while now. Since you want greens shipping time shouldn't be a problem and Canadians ca...

I'm done buying 12 oz. bags of coffee

I used to think this way, but I don't defrost anymore. I find what really works best is to freeze my coffee in glass canning jars and leave them in the freezer. Just take them out a minute to weigh out the coffee you're going to use immediately then the jar goes back into the freezer. I could not

Can Caffeine Make You Sleepy Through a Paradoxical Drug Effect?

Hi Frank, I looked into the article you posted of treating paradoxical post-sedation hyperactivity with caffeine, and the quality of research I could find was really lacking. I could find some information though... Barbiturates work by increasing the response to GABA and caffeine can reduce GABA rel...

I'm done buying 12 oz. bags of coffee

Cherry Hill Coffee used to have 1 lb bags for $16 for most of their coffees. They switched to 12 oz bags with a baseline price of $12.99 (equivalent to $17.32/lb) I'm pretty sure the smaller packages are just a way of concealing price increases from consumers. And since we pay more for everything he...

Favorite coffee blends for 15-16 gram doubles on spring lever machine

It's perfectly possible to get proper extractions from very light roasted coffees with a smaller basket. Grind fine enough to exact the sweetness and get a good flow rate. The shot will have less volume but the taste will be similar to the 22g shot. That's my experience based on comparing directly t...

Favorite coffee blends for 15-16 gram doubles on spring lever machine

This is true too, I used to worry about having a small basket on my La Pavoni and not being able to use the same coffee as everyone else because the roasters were recommending doses from 18-22g. Thanks to some of Jim's posts I realized that it didn't matter and I should just dose the 14g my basket w...
