Scooping keeps beans fresher than pouring beans?

Discuss flavors, brew temperatures, blending, and cupping notes.

hi yall

ok co2 is heavier than air.

beans stored in a mason jar should have a layer of co2 develop on top of them, correct?

when i pour out the beans from the jar, the co2 pours out like water, correct?

these facts lead me to realize that maybe scooping the beans out would keep more of the co2 in the jar. less oxidation would occur because the beans would not get an oxygen bath everytime the jar opened and the co2 got poured out and replaced with oxygen.

i dont really have an opinion, im just collecting data at this point.

what do you guys think?

thanks.

Wouldn't the CO2 sink to the bottom of the jar, with air on top from opening it?

yes exactly. it would stay in there because the jar doesnt get tipped.

when you pour out the beans you also pour out the co2 which is what you want to stay in there.

if you scooped would you introduce less air into the mix?

thats the theory at least.

i dont think it really make much difference for me personally at my current 2 lbs a week rate.

i just thought there might be some interesting discussion about it. i like odd topics.

It is a good topic. One-pound bags tend to go stale before my wife and I can finish them. I also like to drink more than one roast concurrently. So prolonging the freshness of opened bags would be less wasteful. I'm thinking of switching to glass canisters and trying the inert gas, since I do scoop now but the beans go stale nonetheless.
