(split from Gold Pro 2 Hole Steam Wand Tip by moderator...)

I received 4 LM double baskets (ridged). These are being used in the bottomless PF sold by Chris. My question involved the removal of them from the PF. Currently, to remove from the bottomless PF, I just give them a whack with the wooden cross-bar from the knockbox and can then quickly reload with another prepared clean basket. Will this method damage the baskets? Finally, is it foolish to rinse each basket after use or is a simple wipe with a paper towel sufficient?

It's possible that a hard whack could dent the edge of the basket, leading to a compromised seal. Why not remove the portafilter's basket retention spring, then it will just drop out?

I just wipe them between uses, then soak them in Cafiza espresso cleaner along with the portafilter once a week (unless if it's a bottomless).

PS: Tip for removing a portafilter basket - pry it out with a blind basket. Specifically:
  • Grab a blind basket and hold it bottom-side up,
  • Place its edge underneath the edge of the filter basket in the portafilter,
  • Using the ears of the portafilter for leverage, pry out the filter basket.
Sorry, it's a lot harder to describe than demonstrate. It doesn't work well for portafilters with sloped ears though (e.g., La Spaziale S1).

The genius lies in simplicity. I removed the spring and just drop the basket into my knockbox. This method also allows for one step tamping within the PF. Previously, the baskets were pre-tamped on a counter and then inserted in the PF, which then required a finishing tamp. Now life appears much simpler. At this point, I must again thank this site for informing me of the GoldPro tip. That thing is just great!

you know, I have found that the baskets pry out a lot easier after you use them a lot. that said, the only time I use a spouted portafilter is with a ridgeless double basket... never seems to have any trouble fitting, or popping out. in fact, if i hit the portafilter handle instead of the basket rim on the side of the trash can, the basket flies out with ease...
