Who are some good NY roasters? The good cafes I've been to have used beans roasted in Chicago and Canada :-) ...

Thanks,

Matt

In New York City: Oren's Daily Roast (no espresso), Gillies, Dallis Brothers, going from small to large. Upstate: Gimme Coffee, lots of espresso blends from them.

Thank you, Jim.

I stopped by Sicaffe, which also roasts, but had a distinctly mediocre espresso and so passed on the beans. The barista was really not paying attention, and I thought that he was either such a master that his technique was internalized or just careless. Guess it was the latter.

Best,

Matt

49th Parallel Epic Espresso at Chelsea Market

I was in Chelsea Market last week and had an espresso from "9th Street Espresso". Really excellent. Maybe the best espresso that I have had.

I bought some of the beans that they use: 49th Parallel Epic Espresso.

They charge $12 for 12 oz. of beans. This is actually cheaper, when you factor in shipping, than ordering it directly from http://www.49thparallelroasters.com/coffeelistEspresso.html

49th Parallel also did very well in a recent espresso bean tasting. http://www.coffeegeek.com/opinions/markprince/10-09-2007. I wasn"t so sure of the results of this tasting test but after actually experiencing the beans I think that they may be right.

I have also gotten good beans in kilo bags at the Italian food importer in Chelsea Market. Miscela D'Oro Gusto Classico in the green bag. They have an espresso bar there and use these beans.

While I was in New York, I stopped by Grumpy coffee, very good espresso but they do not roast, you can however purchase beans there. The baristas at Grumpy also spoke highly of 9th street but I did not have time to try them.

If you're heading upstate, I recently discovered Monkey Joe in Kingston. I haven't visited the store, but I've bought some of their espresso blend beans and I was impressed.

They are restoring an old roaster to be put at their Greenpoint location.

Nothing worth mentioning here. The fact that they keep beans exposed to the air - just terrible.
Espresso is bad too.

Porto Rico is *awful*. They're good for office coffee or cold brew in the winter -- but thats it. They're very much a place that treats beans as a commodity - they have little flavor to start with, and the care put into roasting is just not there.
That said, they're better than everything BUT our favorite micro-roasters, and they charge almost nothing for the beans ($5.99/lb for a decent sumatran? ok!)

The Gimme stuff is amazing.

9th Street used to have their own blend, custom roasted at Gilles or Dallis. Did they stop?
Oslo ( williamsburg ) had the same thing going on.

I dislike the standard blends by Gilles or Dallis.

I don't care for Grumpy either - I find it too clinical (both locations).

9th Street uses CCC blend

Define clinical.
