The metal on the base of La Peppina's boiler kettle can become fragile with age. If there is rust, it will be on the bottom edge of the kettle where it meets the metal of the base, near the heating element.

N.B. When reseating the kettle for use after it has been removed in the manner described below, hand-tighten the stem gingerly; exerting too much force as you tighten the stem could crack the kettle. Use a very small nail or allen wrench for leverage and don't overdo it-- the kettle simply needs to make a watertight seal against the o-ring. If you have a leak at the seal, a new o-ring and/or a little food-safe high-temperature no-melt lubricant may be in order.

Packaging Peppina carefully can help prevent hairline cracks in the metal of the kettle which might occur if Peppina is handled roughly ... perhaps on a transatlantic flight or a flight over the mountains :D

Securing La Peppina's kettle is very simple. For best results, USE TWO (2) BOXES, one inside the other, with foam "peanuts" between the inner and outer boxes.

STEP #1. FIND A SMALL NAIL

STEP #2. INSERT NAIL AND UN-SCREW THE METAL ROD COUNTER-CLOCKWISE. REMOVE IT.

STEP #3. GENTLY WIGGLE THE KETTLE AND LIFT IT UP

STEP #4 KETTLE, PLATE, AND ROD

STEP #5 BUBBLE WRAP THE KETTLE AND THE PORTAFILTER HANDLE AND OTHER PIECES SEPARATELY

HOW NOT TO BOX LA PEPPINA FOR A TRANSATLANTIC FLIGHT:
Image

The VEGETABLE box is too thin and flimsy. It is also closed incorrectly, flap over flap  so that it can be easily crushed
Image

When the box is CRUSHED, this can happen, and it is not a good place for bent metal :(
