How do I remove the whitish deposits on the machine lower front without disturbing the (roughly structured plasticky) paint?

I think it's mostly limescale. Light 30% vinegar wash did not remove it.

And what's the method of choice for removing whitish gunk from black plastic steam knobs?
It must be finger grease mixed with limescale.

In the end I think I would like to paint or cover the lower front red, like the newer Magister models have it.
Any suggestions how I should go about it? Full disassembly is not my cup of coffee, and I don't have a workshop, just my kitchen.

That may need to be polished off, but meantime, you might try stronger vinegar solution, maybe citric acid solution, or possibly consider a magic eraser - if you do the later, try it in a nondescript area in case it causes harm to the finish.
