A quick question, do you guys keep the pf locked in the machines? or is it just for the pictures?

I think there might be two answers here- for those of us that don't keep there machine running 24/7- OUT might be be a tad better - less pressure on the grouphead seal and so less changing of it. For those who do run there machine- They will want a hot PF when they are ready to go- which usually is NOW -since there machine is ready when they are!

Although unlike a commercial establishment where you want to avoid the common problem of coffee stand cold PF and those that never flush etc- thus a lot of sour shots-

I put forth a possible scenario- an no blasphemy intended-

Supposing you leave it out- and then insert it for the water dance that most of you have to do to clear the HX of overheated water- -----Would that not be sufficient to heat it up? It just seems that it would be and the GH seals would incur less groove memory and stay newer longer....... ?

I do not have a 24/7 "On" machine nor a operable HX at the moment- so this can be read as a question......Just no rocks please...

When I used an Isomac Tea I found that the pf really needed to stay in the bayonet all the time to be hot enough. (Plus a warm pf handle feels so much better in your hand.)

With the Synesso I still keep the pf in the bayonet, but not too tight. Basically I rotate the pf until it just engages the gasket with enough tension to keep it from slipping off. The pf stays just as hot either way.

Home set up. Girlfriend calls it "CoffeeLand."

Granted, this is a little over the top, but I do love having a dedicated vacuum that can quickly take care of loose grounds.

I'm mostly happy with this little corner of my home and avoid upgrade lust more days than not.

I'm the same way with my Astoria. The gaskets are supposed to stay more supple longer if they're 'covered' than if they're exposed to the 'elements', too.

Hey Lee,

Sweet CoffeeLand. That looks like the other Ikea cabinet I was considering - I think mine's from the same group. I also have that same vacuum under my counter.

Great minds (hopped up on too much caffeine) think alike.

Fred,

Funny & small world. Yep, Ikea. And the same vacuum gives me a solid retort when I get accused of OCD ('it's a Home Barista standard with the Ikea cabinet').

Hope your corner is brining proper pleasure to you.

Best,

Hey Jon,

I'm usually in town every six months or so. I have family there and my parents' house is near Preston, ID. The only place that I've known of to get decent coffee there is Caffe d'Bolla. Funny, it's another Jo(h)n that owns and operates that place! Do you have any other recommendations? I know some people like Salt Lake Roasting Co., but I don't know.... I'll be around there in a few weeks. Happy Holidays!

Salt Lake on the trip agenda...

Marshall's contribution, a page or so back, looks great. This is the first time I've seen his new counter since hearing about the remodeling. Very nice!

Floating between this forum and some retailer forums, I saw John's place come up in some posts; Caffe d'bolla. I'll be in SLC very soon......probably after the Christmas holidays or maybe even just before, and am looking forward to wandering over there from the Embassy Sts.

I saw a post earlier asking about leaving the PF in the machines. I learned from my Dad to clean mating surfaces first and then put 'em back together...never overtightening. I applied that from the beginning on all my machines, and have nearly two years on the OEM rubber gasket on my S1. I leave the machine on overnight and through the next day about 33% of the time.

Even leaving the PF lightly placed in the brew group, and after pulling it off, drying it off and loading it with the next shot, the brew boiler will many times kick in when I place it back into the group. The PF is one heck of a heat sink. I'm not sure what the purpose of leaving it off would serve, unless the reference was to overnight when shut off. But even then, if lightly torqued, I'd think its place should be in the group. (plus a passerby won't have the urge to use it as a hammer!) :-)

I'll bet! With a view like that...man, those are colors we can only dream of in the fall here in California. Beautiful!

(Actually, there are some ornamentals that go berserk in the fall...and the vineyards are pretty...but it's not like that!)

Cheers,

I envy all of your setups. Mine isn't bad, but having a little bit of elbow room would be amazing. I love my equipment, but not necessarily the space that it is in. Having to wedge the knockbox in front of the microwave gets a little obnoxious sometimes :)
