I like the roaster shrine pics....sorry I don't have any pics of my current roaster setups....

But I do have a pic of my home espresso bar, just taken today.

Wow, nice grinder setup! Do you still use the flat burr SJ? What difference do you notice between the SJ and Macap conical? both taste-wise and pour-wise...

Cheers, Mark

Not for the last few days, the Macap is so new I'm using it for all of my shots at the moment...
But I will use the Super-Jolly for sure when I have multiple blends to keep dialed in.

Dangit - now I'm cross-posting (apologies Mr. Kehn)
Here's the answer I posted at Coffeegeek: CLICK THIS

I have not compared the taste yet, but I can say that the pours quality is amazing. It is MUCH easier to get a smooth and beautiful pour with the big conical. The pours are instant-on and well-centered every time and the extractions are amazing.

And it seems like it just doesn't blonde. In the video, the shot was pouring for ~30 seconds before the first HINT of blonding.

Can I make a nice pour with the Super-Jolly?
Sure I can....but it takes much more care to get anything close to what the macap does almost effortlessly.

That is one heck of a grinder! That pour would make me want to forego the cup and just stick my head directly under the portafilter.

The less fuss observation is mirrored in the titan grinder matchup. We never really came up with a reason why conical are less fussy. First thought was grind consistency but the particle analysis and scanning electron microscope samples yielded no clear reason.

I am waiting for my turn with the big Macap, Robur and Max. My experience with the Kony was less than stellar and my Jr has the same size burrs as the SJ, no real difference between the two that I could consistently detect.

I have been watching eBay for a used Max but no luck yet.

The Jr and Elektra still make a nice shot...

and that is the end of the shot

Too bad there isn't some sort of retrofitting kit with conicals for the Junior. It may be possible to DIY since they have a new hybrid version, but that's something I'm not positive about. I'd guess there is something unique with the hybrid that wouldn't allow for modifying the original version.

from...
The goal is great tasting espresso not great looking espresso.

cannonfodder wrote:I do not normally use a bottomless portafilter. I got caught up in the bottomless is better rage a year or two ago. Since then I have decided I prefer the shots from my single spout over the bottomless. It is less a taste issue and more a texture issue. The bottomless PF creates an abundance of crema, however that crema tends to be larger bubbled than a spouted shout. I prefer the finer texture and silkier mouthfeel I get from a single spout. It is like comparing stiff bubbly milk to micro foamed milk for me.

At one point I found myself obsessing over how pretty the shot looked, kneeling in front of the espresso machine as if offering up a prayer to the espresso god. I put away the bottomless portafilter, quit obsessing, and just enjoyed the espresso.

welcome back.

But in another thread I mention that I only drag out the bottomless PF if I am working with a new coffee and want to see what is going on prior to going back to my spout. That is the first shot from a CCC blend that I have not used, hence the bottomless. I still prefer the single spout.

sorry bout the lack of photography skills... it looks a bit pale in this pic

I prefer single spouted PF as well, I agree with cannon fodder about it being a texture issue, not taste...

So after many months of no espresso or cappuccino my Espresso Bar is Finally Complete...aka the rebuilt La Marzocco 2EE with the newer version brew switches. And my new major and used jolly and mahlkoenig. My upgrade fever is finally over :-)

Wow, a LaMarzocco at home. That's crazy the setup you have there.

I think I might be the only one here with such an inexpensive machine. But as you can see, I took everyone's advice to heart and paired my Gaggia Carezza (w/ Silvia steam wand mod) with a Macap M4 stepless. I only ever grind enough for one double at a time, so I don't use the hopper (that's my single basket acting as a cover). With this awesome grinder I get great shots from my $175 dollar machine.

Indeed it is....especially that i had to unplug the washer and dryer. I guess i'll have to take my laundry across the street instead...haha. My friends think i am crazy...they were like "all this hot metal crap to get a cappuccino and 2oz shot"

That's kind of like someone saying a Ferrari is just a metal box with wheels that gets you from point A to point B, but yeah most people can't comprehend buying a home machine that even costs $500 let alone something more. Your setup is better than what I've seen in some coffee shops lol.

The Carezza and Macap combo looks really cool, and I bet you get some great shots. I still use my Gaggia Evolution because it's so simple and makes really good shots, and the milk foams like a dream with the Silvia wand. I'm getting closer to that with my Junior but it's much more powerful and heats the milk up so fast. Drives me crazy sometimes when I just get hot milk with a little bubbly foam on top.

Very nice Jon!

I always loved the shot quality and the ease of achieving an even extraction from my conical Compak. However, I just could not learn to like the doser and the wife absolutely hated the doser. No room for two grinders, so the new toy is in. Attached is the latest image of my setup. The K30, although a slight downgrade in terms of the grind quality is still a great grinder and a very practical one at that...

Nice setups, I like the kit Teme. The K30 matches nicely with machine. The Monster grinders tend to dwarf the home espresso machine they sit by but you definitely have a nice balance.
