My machine is "steaming" at the top of the glass. Is this a bad gasket? Please Advise

Well based on that long description of your problem it is hard to tell. I will assume that you have an Olympia 67. I would suggest three possible culprits:

1) Bad gasket. At the top of the site glass there will be a rubber washer and a brass ring. If you go to my restoration post you will see the pics to see what I am talking about.

2) I am assuming that if it is a 67 then you have a pressure relief valve sitting on top of your site glass. Now this may need adjusting, it may have a broken or a weak spring, or you may need to replace the small silicone disk that is in that valve.

3) If the valve is working correctly it could be that your pressurestat has died and thus the valve is blowing off the excess pressure and doing what it is supposed to do. Does your ready light turn off. If you are seeing it blow steam and the ready light is still on...then this may be your problem.

I would read the restoration post. See if you are comfortable narrowing the problem down, re-gasket if you need to or replace pressurestat. If putting a wrench to your machine makes you nervous then you can send it to Jim at 1st-Line on the east coast or Cara on the west coast to do this for you.

If you can post some pics and some more detail, then I can help you a bit further.

Steve, Thanks for the help..... I removed the bolt at the top of the glass....I didn't see a plastic disc. Is that the right spot? I think the pressure stat might be the problem. The light is on and it's steaming..... Can the pressure stat be adjusted or should I just replace it. the machine is a 67....with an 89 serial number. thanks again for you help. Allan

can you post a picture for me? I feel like I am doing surgery in the dark? Now I will assume that you are seeing this:

Image

If you take that whole brass valve of you will see a washer and a gasket like this. This is a pic. of the bottom of the water tube, but the top one looks the same:

Now if you open up the valve, you will see it has several parts inside:

and one of them will have a silicone puck:

Now with regards to your pressurestat...Does it ever turn off? Can you pull up on the bottom of it and hear it switch off.

Image

It is adjustable, but I would only do this if you have a pressure gauge and can ensure you are setting it withing safe bounds.

Now please keep in mind, that I am giving you these hints based on my own experience. I make no commitment that they will work on your machine and I take no responsibility on whether they will or will not work. Any work you do on your machine is done at your risk. If you attempt to make adjustment to your machine, please understand the risk of electricity and the risk of damaging an expensive machine.

I would suggest that if it is not a simple fix that you feel is well within your mechanical skills, that you send it to one of the professionals that I referenced earlier in this thread.

Good Luck

Last year I was having problems with my Olympia.....It was leaking at the site glass..top. I stopped using it and have been using my Livia. A few weeks ago I started to use the Cremina again.....and it worked perfectly. I have been using everyday. I can't believe how superior it is compared to the Pasquini. I have had the machine for a few years and it just sat on the counter.....Can I have #89 Allan
