Good point. The reading under false pressure was exactly 1 psi (0.069 bar) higher than true pressure. The false pressure can be bled by unscrewing the boiler cap just a quarter turn until you hear a hiss. To do this safely, the pressure should be bled as soon as the heating element light goes out for the first time. If you have to apply pressure on the cap for it to move, don't. Let it cool down completely then try again.

You can do this even more safely by removing the steam wand (when the machine is cool :) ) and placing a T-connector there. The pressure gauge is attached to one of the remaining threads and the steam wand to the other. Then you can use the steam valve to purge the false pressure.
