New York espresso culture

Want to talk espresso but not sure which forum? If so, this is the right one.

Thought this article in the NY Times might be of interest to members of HB:

http://www.nytimes.com/2006/09/13/dining/13coff.html

They refer to coffeegeek.com as the scene's premier website. Unfortunately, I guess they must not have heard of HB.

Cheers,
Ken
If not for coffee, I'd have no personality at all.

My thoughts exactly! Good article otherwise.

its pretty disgusting that a good cup of espresso cant be found in midtown NYC, but there are, hmm, 6 starbucks that i can recall that are within a 5 block walking distance to my office.

There also isn't a good cup of espresso in downtown Charlotte, NC. The issue is that no one can afford the cost per square foot of the real estate except for the big franchise operations.

cost is certainly a factor, but there are quite a few 'coffee' shops, kobricks, or kubricks, or something like that, which boasts best espresso around, does a decent job, but the beans arent too great. theres also an italian place, celentano or something, bar style with lunches, with absolutely horrid coffee. its a shame b/c its a great layout of a place.. the list goes on, the coffee doesnt.
funny b/c all these places have 'grinders' with who knows how old beans, and machines that i want to take home and clean b/c theyve just been abused. most have the perma-milk stains on the froth wands. ugh.

Midtown NYC? You folks are maybe a little spoiled. I have to drive to Austin for a good cup.

Okay, I feel a little better, but it's still four hours to Austin. Texas is a great state to live in but it does have a few drawbacks. MDBGCH (mean distance between good coffee houses) being one of those.

And if you are in Dayton, you are welcome to stop by. I have a lever machine, Isomac, Faema two group, Mazzer Mini and Cimbali Jr. Plenty of toys to play with.
