New thoughts on fingerguard in Mazzer doserless

Grinders are one of the keys to exceptional espresso. Discuss them here.

Alright, late last year, I changed my Super Jolly to a doserless using a Mini-E funnel from EPNW. I think I posted some pics of it a while back. I'll update this post later to include pics. When I did the conversion, I decided to use one of the fingerguards, aka static dispersion screen. It really did a remarkable job keeping the static in check inside the funnel, but there were always clumps of grinds that made it to the PF.

Well, repeated sweeping of the "plug" area caused some of the little wires in the fingerguard to break. While I had the guard in my vise to JB Weld it back together, I used the Jolly without the guard. Static in the funnel is now readily apparant. However, I get virtually no clumping of grinds in the PF now. I do get a thick layer of static-charged grounds coating the inside of the funnel, but those are easily swept out into the PF.

So, what I'm getting at is: If a doserless Mazzer is to be used at home, where you measure out beans for each shot, and speed of building your espresso is not a major concern, then ditching the fingerguard seems to make sense. You can brush out all static-charged grounds from the funnel. Little muss -- no fuss.

If you intend to use a doserless Mazzer in a commercial environment, where speed of building shots is important, and you keep a hopper full of beans, then by all means use the fingerguard so you won't have to stop and sweep the funnel after each grind.

That's interesting Jeremy. When I first got my Majors a few months back, I made static things with paperclip and positively grounded it to case and doser (both of mine were doser) and it made no difference static wise and just seemed to catch the grounds more. I did make up "doserless plates" for them but the 45deg copper angle that I used for the spout just seemed to catch the grounds, so I went back to the dosers.
