Mystified by my La San Marco SM90 grinder.

Grinders are one of the keys to exceptional espresso. Discuss them here.

It has highly misleading indicator marks on the adjuster. It has icons for big and small grind - but not one to the left and one to the right with numbers below.

More like this: (upper case "O" for big grind, lower case "o" for small)

O <-----> o O <-----> o O <-----> o O <------> o
12 11 10 9 8 7 6 5 4 3

Which would mean that a grind of 11 is finer than a grind of 10???

Of course I have no manual, it came with none and it does not look like any of the models in web pictures I've seen. The manufacture date is 12/04.

I've been messing with it and messing with it and getting not much of anywhere. I've either got grind for press pot or turkish powder! It doesn't seem to adjust in between.

Help!

nope. it's just a repetitive illustration: coarser grind to the left; finer grind to the right.

11 ought to be coarser than 10. Whether or not it is misleading, I'd say that depends on where the numbers are. If they are on the case it's okay the way they are, if they are that way (counterclockwise) on the adjustment wheel (which bears the upper burr) it would seem indeed a strange notation.

And since left and right are relative terms with screw-threads and the like (especially when looking from above) it might be easier to remember: clockwise turn - coarser, counterclockwise turn - finer

I've only seen the grinder once in the shop, but the adjustment mechanism appeared similar to that of my Macap where the steps are a tad too wide. Unfortunately with the Macap fine-tuning the shot by changing only the grind is not an option. One has to adjust tamping and/or dosage as well...

Apparently 11 is FINER then 10.

No wonder why I was confused.
