The title pretty much sums it up. My wood handled 58mm stainless convex bottom HB logo tamper arrived today. This is my first Reg Barber tamper, and I like it. The handle does not fit in my palm quite as good as my cheap tamper, but I returned that handle to fit my palm exactly, but this is very close.

As to Dan's promise

"I've just completed several weeks of double-blind tests and they confirm that the HB tamper's extractions are far richer and have more crema than those from the stock Bubinga. "

Looks like an all crema shot to me... 8)

I've got to get one of those double-walled glass demitasses, they make for a mighty fine looking shot. Oh, and the tamper is pretty nice looking too. :)

I have to thank Barry for the glasses. I broke two in two days, and then I got a present...

Dave,

Hello & Happy New Year to you!

The tamper looks really nice, but you (or is that Dan) said: "I've just completed several weeks of double-blind tests and they confirm that the HB tamper's extractions are far richer and have more crema..."

I am curious. Were you using a convex tamper before or a flat tamper? Also, is your shower screen flat or convex?

Ciao,
Len

Evening Len, good to see you here at HB.

That was Dan, and it was a playful statement from another thread.

I was using a generic convex tamper with a rose wood handle. I turned the handle down a little to fit my palm and then sanded it with 600 grit to make it nice and smooth. Put about 6 coats of polyurethane and hit it with 0000 steel wool between coats. Smooth as glass, but the Reg is of much higher quality. It also fits my basket a little better.

I have a 51mm lava tamp for my lever machine, flat base for a flat shower screen, and my new HB tamper is convex (as was my old one) for the convex screen on my Isomac.
