Mazzer Mini ETL/UL vs. Non-ETL/UL Grinder

Grinders are one of the keys to exceptional espresso. Discuss them here.

I was wondering what the difference in the actual build is between the ETL/UL and Non-ETL/UL versions of the Mazzer Mini grinder.

I understand that the ETL/UL rated version is needed in a commercial setting. Is it just a difference in the certification standard?

Are there any concerns about a non-ETL/UL version being a fire or electrical hazard because it is not rated?

TerryZ sells both models and explained to me that the two grinders are identical, however the ETL version is certified, much like the UL certification familiar to US consumers. This ETL Listed Mark FAQ that I googled explains further:

What's the difference between the UL, CSA, and ETL Listed Marks?
Both marks demonstrate that the product that bears it has met the minimum requirements of widely accepted product safety standards as determined through the independent testing of a Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratory (NRTL). And, as part of that testing regimen, the product manufacturer has agreed to periodic follow-up inspections to verify continued compliance. The only real difference between the Marks is in the service, and services, of the testing laboratory behind them.

ETL vs. NON ETL

Yeah Dan is right. I just double checked with Brian before I posted a reply too. Here is what Brian said..."they are the same other than the certification"

Businesses would be interested and should use certified models, however I don't know if there are ETL Police yet..

Let me also add that in the instance of insurance investigation, the difference between being reimbursed, per your policy for damages, are reliant on UL and ETL certified products. If the product in question is not certified with these marks, your claim in void. Cheery thought Huh?

Although I don't remember where I read or heard it, I believe that the ETL version may have some tamper resistent fasteners holding the bottom cover on as opposed to normal fasteners on the non ETL version. This is presumably to prevent unauthorized repairs compromising the integrity of the machine and hence the certification.
