Hi,

This is my first post, but I have been a lurker for a while. Read most of the Mazzer-related posts I think.

Anyway, I bought a well-used Mazzer Major grinder, but am a little confused.

Here are some pictures:

The grinder has new burrs, and does an amazing job. Very fast, and much more quiet than my Rocky.

It came in with upper and lower microswitches in the doser (which I took out). However, the power switch is a simple on/off switch. Funny yo see the bottom label that says 220V. Hmm...

I took the doser out and am thinking about making the grinder doserless. My first attempts resulted in quite a bit of static... Oh well. I may have to bite the bullet and get the (golden?) doserless conversion parts. I am not sure if they will fit though. Looks like the lower screws in the doser are in different locations.

Any ideas on the background of this machine? Any recommendation on where I should start?

Thanks in advance - very glad that I found these forums...

On TMC, in the "members clubroom" (you will have to become a member to be able to read that), there are a few threads about this item. Personally, I am considering a modification on my Major also, and am awaiting a cheaper option for the funnel etc., which probably will be available on TMC soon.

You have a Super Jolly, not a Major. The Major is larger and has three horizontal ventilation slits near the top.

Hmmm, looks like the one that someone in Pacifica had for sale on Craigslist, I was second in line.... :(
Nice find.

Thanks!

Ah, I kept looking at pictures, and was assuming an older Major without the vents. The chassis looked more like a Major.

Now, to be sure, I measured the size of the burrs and they are 64 mm. A Super Jolly indeed!

The internals / wiring / controller seemed more similar to those of a Major. Of course, given the modularity of components, and the length of time these units have been in service, the size of the burr is the way to identify.

Yes, that's the one! Quite happy with it. I am planning in refinishing it and will try to convert it to doserless. Let's see how long this will take me.

Now I'll start researching the doserless conversion specifically for the SJ.

My Major and Super Jolly:

The Super Jolly is the same older body style as yours.

I love these guys. Doserless is definitely the way to go. Every time I clean the Major's doser I tell myself it's time go doserless on it too.

Various web forums are full of ideas for Super Jolly doserless conversions. I did mine with thin aluminum vent pipe metal and a piece of 3/4 inch copper pipe, held together with epoxy.
