Macap doser mod: anybody done this?

Grinders are one of the keys to exceptional espresso. Discuss them here.

I've got a Macap M4 stepless with doser, and I would like to do the modification where you add electrical tape to the blades so it sweeps cleaner. My instructions don't have any info about taking the doser apart. I've had a quick look at it, and turned the center pin inside the doser until it stopped, but didn't want to force it too much. Any advice on taking this apart?

Thanks,

Andrew

I can't help one bit  But I have to say you must be a very exacting person, my M4 is amazingly clean, barely anything left in there after I'm done. I should weigh it but I doubt it amounts to even a gram.

Good luck.

Yeah, it's pretty clean, but there is some left behind and this looked like an easy enough mod that would save me some time cleaning the doser. I figure if I can get it to sweep even cleaner, why not give it a try.

Mine is a stepped model, but I'd guess the doser is the same.

I'm writing this from memory, so it may not be perfect. ;-)

There's a black plastic "screw" covering the top of the vertical shaft in the middle of the doser. The black plastic screw is a cap that can be removed by pulling it gently straight up. Removing it will reveal a threaded vertical shaft with a pin in the top end and a shakeproof nut holding the doser mechanism in place. Remove and save the pin, then remove the nut.

Remove the chute guard (if you haven't already done so). Remove the 2 small capscrews holding the top part of the doser body onto the grinder. From here, you'll be able to remove all the rest of the doser mechanism easily.

I've done the tape mod and it makes the doser sweep a lot cleaner.

Thanks for that. I may never have figured out how to remove that plastic cap. Is it actually necessary to remove the doser from the body?

I can't remember whether it's absolutely necessary, but it's very easy to remove the top (clear) section -- unscrew the two capscrews, and off it comes. Removing it makes the job a lot easier.
