Ok so I think I have come to a decision on what I will be using. I am going to go with the FR8+ to begin with. I think I will continue using local and artisan roasters for espresso for a while. The FR8 should set me up with my press pot coffee usage to get me used to roasting. Once I have got some roast time under my belt I will probably look into modding a BBQ drum roaster for my larger coffee intake purposes. Thanks for the advice. I am certain you all will be hearing from me again.

Well I changed my mind, I have decided to start out my home roasting on the tried and true Poppery I and II. After reading in what little spare time I have had lately this seems like it will be the best entry into home roasting. Ebayed two poppery I's and a couple poppery II's. Figured it couldn't hurt to have a back up or two, since they were pretty cheap. Now working on gathering a couple metal collanders, storage jars, and deciding on the greens. In about three to four weeks (ie when school is finished) I should be going full speed ahead. Thanks for the advice. If I run into any walls I am sure I will be posting more.

Good show.

I started with an iRoast2 and it died after about 2 years/400 roasts. I don't gas bbq so my upgrade was a Hottop programmable. Great roaster. Getting very good espresso.

Going inexpensive to start is wise. I imagine the experience you'll get roasting with a popper will prepare you for a bbq drum roaster, which is also a wise move given the testimonials and reviews.

Happy roasting :D

Hi Lynn,

I have been roasting for about a month now with a Poppery ll and love it! Did the E-Bay $8.00 purchase and a $30.00 electrical modification with a plastic 2 gang box, dimmer and single pole switch and two computer cords. It was pretty easy and it is a snap to regulate the fan and heating coil of the popper. It is a grounded and safe modification. Let me know if you need pics posted of the setup or walk you through it. Order the new 500 degree rated thermometer,Home Coffee Roasting book by Ken Davids and a pound of Liquid Amber beans. They are fantastic and made a huge difference in my espresso pulls! Flavor and crema is so fine. Hope this helps :D .

Sure I would love to see your mod. Just received the twin poppery I's in the mail. To get started I figured I would just wing it the first couple batches and see how well I did by my own senses. Mods may be in the works if needed. Though I am not sure what I will do. Also enroute is 10#s of greens from sweetmarias. mostly their espresso blends to try out.
