I just recently picked up a used older one group La Pavoni Pub V locally. This machine is one of the older Pubs that had an external pump and unfortunately the seller of the machine didn't have the pump for the machine.

I've spent a good amount of time reading these forums and alt.coffee, but I still don't have a good sense of exactly what model pump/motor I need and where would be a good place to get one for cheap. I've read a lot about the merits of different motor sizes, pump sizes and the effects of input pressure on pressure stability etc., but I can't find a good clear answer to my question. Ideally I'd like to run this machine off of a 5 gallon water jug directly (i.e without a flojet pump). A. Is this possible? B. What pump and motor setup should I try and get for this setup?

Sadly, no. I should have mentioned in my initial post that this machine is for home use.

oh good grief, there's probably a half-dozen places in seattle that can set you up (and, unlike the rest of the country, they'll actually know what you're talking about). have a look in the yellow pages, or give the folks at espressoparts.com in olympia a call.

Yeah, I'm well aware. It's just that I'm not looking to pay the prices I've been quoted for a new pump and motor and so I'd like to get them off ebay, but to do that I need to have a better sense of what exactly I need to be buying.

have a look at: http://www.proconpumps.com/Page19.htm#1 to determine what part numbers are suitable.

you'll need something like: 11_A_F11__ (fill in the blanks; in some cases multiple configurations will work)

for the motor, you'll need at least a 1/5hp carbonator motor with slot-end shaft for use with clamp mount pumps. 110v or 220v? some carbonator motors can be set up for either voltage.

thanks for the helpful replies, that gives me a much better idea of what to be looking for. Am I correct in assuming that if I want to be feeding directly off a 5gal bottle I should look for a pump with a higher GPH?

i don't think that matters. fwiw, the pumps i've seen have usually been in the 50 to 60 gph range.
