Dan,

Maybe I missed this before, but I am now noticing that the only response option for the last post in any thread is "REPLY." "QUOTE" is only available for the preceding posts. Is this new? Can it be corrected?

Another thought. Could the "Notify me" option be made a default in our individual profiles, so that we do not have to open the "Options" tab on each post and check a box (I often forget to do this).

Thanks.

The very last post shows reply instead of quote to subtlety discourage quoting en masse. The quote button for posts are available in the topic review section below the main edit pane if you want to excerpt portions of any post in the thread, including the last one.

As for the notify message, click Notify me upon replies by default in your profile.

Marshall reported the No Quote a while back... There's no need to quote the post above, except for 20th century types with dial-up :P

Yes, there is, mainly when you want to respond to two or three lines out of a 15-line post.

Me too! No quote for the last message is pretty annoying.

Bitch! Bitch! Bitch!

Well, if you observant types scroll down the edit page on your 640x480 monitors, you'll see a quote button on the last message :P

If I get a new monitor with better resolution will my clumping problems vanish? :D

I agree the "reply" for the last post is an imperfect disincentive to quoting en masse. However, as Ian wryly points out, the option is still available in its (intentionally) less obvious location in the TOPIC REVIEW section directly beneath the edit window.

Button, schmutton...

You can "roll your own" quote by using the "quote" tag like below:
...the option is still available in its (intentionally) less obvious location in the TOPIC REVIEW section directly beneath the edit window.
which produces:

.
This way is not as easy, but it beats whining.

And Ian's suggestion also has the benefit quoting MULTIPLE posts easily.

I don't know about that, JR. It's hard to beat a fine whine.

FWIW, I like the quote option - used judiciously, of course - because it feels more like a dialog.

My desire for the quote button was based on the fact that too often someone else makes a reply before I post mine. I like to type, spell check, proof read then preview (proof read again) all my posts before submitting.

If you guys saw my posts before spell check and proof reading you might really know just little intelligence I really have (as if it wasn't already apparent)!

Evidently you've never seen it, but the preview/submit button checks for a message posted after you began composing your reply and displays it above the edit window with a warning ("A message has been posted while you were editing, do you wish to continue?" or some such). This gives you the opportunity to reformulate your response in light of a message that will appear before yours.

Oh wow no Dan I haven't. Its not much of an issue on these boards, but on other non-coffee boards I visit the posting activity is very fast (a lot of users). There its more a problem for me.

I really can't complain about the design and function of these forums as they work so well.

And again, the more polite get shafted by those that have less-than-stellar manners. I understand why you do it Dan, I just hate that you have to. There should be a way to discourage those that have no consideration for others that doesn't reduce the comfort and use for those that do.

As I said earlier, it's a less than perfect solution. Since there are some who are really bothered by it, I've added a profile option: "Show reply button for last post". If you're a diehard quoter, set it to "No" under User Control Panel > Profile.
