Link(s) are in the Espreso Gear FAQ for those who already know they should keep their equipment clean to find out how. Yet constantly hear on various forums including here people making comments indicating they don't regularly clean their coffee equipment and don't seem to even know they should regularly clean their espresso machine. Reduced or uneven flow caused by blocked group screens or funky baskets and portafilters etc. or just off tasting shots miraculously better after cleaning seems just too common. IIRC someone recently commented on a HB forum post they'd had their E61 HX machine four months but aren't a fan of detergent backflushing so haven't yet!

One common misconception often heard is that if only pulling a few shots a day you don't need to clean as often and detergent backflush every month or so often enough. I disagree and agree with Malachi when he said:
In general, the less use a machine gets the more frequently it will need to be cleaned. I know that sounds counter-intuitive - but a machine that is under constant use will also be flushed regularly, reducing the amount of time that oils and contaminant can "cook" into surfaces.

I believe keeping equipment clean is a big part of Barista Tips and Techniques and reasons for same should be in this forum topic FAQ.
