I hear you. Even though I'm a New Yawker by heart, a little hyperbole is cool with me. Especially since I haven't eaten a corn beef sandwich in 40 years (and have no plans to do so in the future)! :-)

But, this was the opposite. It started as a discussion of the Carnegie (which I like very much), and then I used Langer's as my reference point.

I once asked a waiter at the Carnegie why the sandwiches were so gargantuan (I've never finished one). He said the rent was so high, they had to charge a lot for their food. So, to make up for it, they overstuff the sandwiches.

OT, but that's precisely my beef (hehehe) with many coffee shops offering Clover coffee. They want to charge as much as they possibly can for a cup, so they supersize the portion. On the one hand, they're trying to be ultra exclusive. On the other hand, they give you McDonald's-sized portions. Really absurd.

I agree with Marshall, but will go a bit further, in saying that Langer's is not merely the equal of Carnegie, but easily surpasses it. Carnegie long ago embraced its status as a tourist trap. The only Pastrami in New York that is superior to Langer's is Katz's, but Langer's has such superior bread that they serve a better sandwich.

I dream of a Katz Pastrami sandwich served on Langer's bread. As this is a practical impossibility, the next best alternative is to get a rye bread at Moshe's Bakery on Second Avenue, Pastrami to go at Katz, and build your own sandwich.

I intended no such implication. I spent so much time with my dad in Nate N' Al's when I was growing up that they gave us the whole place for the lunch after his memorial. It was your appetite for controversy I was remarking on.

Gentlemen, Gentlemen, Gentlemen, please
allow me to interrupt.......The Best Pastrami in New York is PASTRAMI QUEEN (1125 Lexington Ave, between 78-79 Street). They source their bread from Orwasher's, a renown New York City bakery. Katz's is tooooo salty, but very good. The re-incarnated Second Ave Deli now at 33rd Street is okay if you don't know any better, but doesn't merit any top ten listing. By the way, visit your cardiologist before you eat any of these sandwiches. Good health to all.

This thread is a classic. I have been going to Katz's basically since I've been eating solid food, and this week will not pass without trying Langer's... Of course, if it's as great as people are saying, I'm going to feel like a real idiot never having gone after 3 years living within walking distance...

I was referring to my friend Abe and his "home team" comment.

I was trying to pay you a complement Marshall, though admittedly, a back handed one . The good news is that the pastrami wars are likely to last at least for a few more generations. We have something of substance to pass on to our kids.

Finally went to Langer's this morning, and damn do I feel dumb for not going before. Probably the best corned beef I've had here, and oh man the rye...

I grew up in NYC and never ate at any of these places. They're what we consider tourist places or places that the suits take clients for lunch. I was in the Bronx last week to visit family and went straight to White Castle...it's been 8 years. I could only do 6.

The only food I miss in Southern California is In 'n Out Burger. I don't think I even saw a deli in OC let alone ate in one.

If you were looking for sympathy for your deprived childhood, you have it. What you disdainfully call a "suit," many of us called "Dad."
