How to make your Mazzer dose like an Anfim

Grinders are one of the keys to exceptional espresso. Discuss them here.

The Anfim Super Caimano grinder doses nicer than a Mazzer. Less spillage, maybe even less clumping. I posted a little article with some crazy ideas that might interest OCD Mazzer owners.

Very entertaining.

I get close by not having a portafilter fork to prevent me from putting the PF where the coffee falls from the doser.

It costs less than $.01, and I feel the peace radiating out of my apartment, throughout the complex, and towards downtown where the city council meets.

Lubbock will soon be the model of a Utopian society.

Keep an eye out. ;)

Great looking mod. I've been meaning to add an antistatic/declumping exit chute screen to my SJ for a while, never got around to it. Perhaps I'll try the single wire trick instead. World Peace, baybee!

By the way, in Italy the baristi call this little snout a "shnozz," although the correct term in technical Italian is "shnozzola."

I think the technical term in Italian is schnozzino. :)

That's too simple to NOT to try.

I've been sans PF fork for a month or so too. I never did like that thing but was too lazy to take it off.

Andy, I've been intrigued by your idea of increasing the length of the chute to reduce the annoying leftward throw. However, I don't like the idea of the paper in the doser chute. I kind of mixed THAT idea with your idea of the guitar strings, etc., and thought that it might be preferable to glue/solder in some thin metal sheets in the chute, more or less in the configuration of your strings, but going down the length of the chute. Have you tried/heard of such a thing? I think I will try it soon.

You certainly could make a schnozzola out of thin sheet metal rather than paper (as some people have done).

I don't know anyone who's tried that. It might cause problems with coffee getting stuck in the there, but it sounds worth trying.

hey.

i love the schnozzzzola!

i use a glue stick instead of tape. i will be adding the wire immediately!

i have a doser microswitch and would like to respect myself but cant figure out how to get it out, without major damage to the major.

found it 'yo. mazzer-kony-removing-doser-microswitch-instructions-t6208.html

thanks.

My thought was to butt the fins/sheets up to where they are flush with the bottom of the dosing chamber, so the star will knock any coffee off the top of them as it goes by. I can still imagine there may be some problem with a little coffee sticking to the sides of the sheets. I will report back when I get a chance to go to a hardware store and get some sheet metal to try this out. I'll have enough extra to make a metal schnozzola if things go south, of course. :)

Great mod! I was thinking of doing something similar to my new Cimbali Max Hybrid, which seems to suffer from really bad clumping for some reason. Would the wire trick work on the Max's doser, I wonder? There's more plastic and less metal, so it might not be grounded and so might not reduce static much. I guess for the price it's worth a shot.

i have not seen an anfim up-close.

what makes an anfim dose like an anfim?

does it have similar wires in the chute, etc?

I don't know all the tricks but here are a few:

1. The doser has "snap action." As you pull the handle, the starfish inside snaps at a certain point to complete its move rather than progressing smoothly through the stroke.
2. Exit hole of doser is funnel-shaped (gets smaller as you go down)
3. Yes, there is a wire in the chute (pic below)
