maddie-miffy has been drinking coffee/espresso, off & on, for over two of her 2-3/4 years, so this shouldn't seem like such a big deal...

this morning, as i headed downstairs to the espresso machine, she asked, "where you going?"

"downstairs to make espresso."

"you make some for me?"

"do you want some?"

"yeah."

so when i was brewing the double, i split the first 10 seconds between two cups (one for me and one for maddie), and let the rest of the shot pour into my cup. i took a tiny taste of hers to see what she was going to get (very bright & fruity, and smooth), and headed back upstairs.

i handed over her cup.

she turned to my wife and declared, "look! i have my own cup!" then she put the cup up to her lips, tilted her head back, and dranked most of what was in there. she handed me the cup as she headed out into the living room, "sank you, da!" there were a few drops left, so i added them to my cup...

What a sweet story! For those who've not had the pleasure of meeting her, here's a picture of Maddie from the recent SCAA conference:

My kids only taste a dab of the crema, where the reaction varies from mmm-m (oldest) to yuck (youngest).

Touching. You know of course you've spoiled her for life. :D And put future additional dents in your pockets. Now not only dealing with things like college tuition but supplying her dorm room with espresso machine, grinder, fresh beans...

Dan, here's the pic where Barry breaks the news that some baristas don't backflush their groups with detergent every evening:

Figured you'd say something like that. Planning for a 3 or a 4 group since she'll end up supplying the whole dorm?

I was about to warn you of making the same mistake twice as a similar sort of thing happened to me the first time I let my son drive my BMW...

Too late! I see she has already declared her preference in vehicles- 8)

May I suggest the 330GTC to her for further consideration? But then again, there is the 360 Spider...

My son like an occasional cappa, espresso is still a bit strong for him, but one day.
Image
Barry, recognize the cup? Perfect single cappa

I also have him blending and roasting, and he is surprisingly good at it. Maybe one day we will have a Chris Cafe.

I'll have him pulling shots for me one day.

My 12 year old daughter has already laid claim to my Ninja when she turns 16. I can see grandmother and grandfather's faces when they find out I gave her a sport bike.

She is not interested in coffee, guess there is a black sheep in every family.

actually, no. a lot of folks think that, but she doesn't get much at any one time, and, to be honest, it's hard to tell the difference between a 2yr old w/ or w/o a wee bit of morning caffeine... iow, watching her run in a circle through the house, over and over, giggling the whole way, happens even w/o the espresso.

That's great. I have wondered how many other kids similiar in age to our 16 month old and 2.5 year old, drink crema. Every morning when I flip on the grinder one of them is standing at my feet waiting for a taste. The 16 month old has quite an appetite, sometimes coming back three or four times for a fingertips worth of crema.

Today the oldest boy came up out of the basement carrying a bag of green beans proclaiming "Look daddy, I gonna help you roast some spresso".

yeah, maddie started on fingertips of coffee when she was 4 months old... one day while i was cupping (i'd hold her in one arm while cupping), she seemed very interested in what i was doing. i offered her a drop of coffee, which she tasted and then immediately asked for more (leaned forward and stuck out her tongue).

she has her own cupping spoon... the other day she was sitting on my lap pulling out spoonfuls of espresso from my demi... "careful, it's hot." "zat's okay. i'll blow on it."
