i.e. fully plated... MAN I shoulda thought of that descriptor. Is descriptor even a word? Anyway I should add it to our title in honor of your post.

Good descriptor yes, but fully plated, not sure.

Your bottomless PF's are OEM's that have had the bottoms machined out of them correct? You would have to have them re-chrome plated after the milling to call them fully plated. From the photos, the milled base is still exposed brass. If I see the term 'fully plated' I would assume that there is no exposed brass on the PF. You may get complaints from customers that were expecting a completely chrome plated PF, it could be a bit misleading.

If they are post milled plated, then ignore my ramblings.

2 questions:
It seems that the espresso does not contact the pf holder at all in a naked holder, so plating is only for looks. Yes?

If it does touch the holder, I was under the impression that unplated brass is better - no tang taste. Definitely true for a nonnaked holder, imho Yes?

Yeah not all are fully plated... The newer OEM arrive from the parts manufacturers fully cut and chromed. Whether they cut the bottoms from the unfinished PF or whether they actually save the materials and manufacture them without bottoms is unknown to me. But it's all chrome and no exposed brass on the OEM factory versions we have. Considering they are from the same or similar sources I would expect all Naked PFs purchased from parts manufacturers will be the same.

If your espresso is making contact with the sides of the naked PF, you have some serious extraction issues. After lots of experimenting, I have come to the conclusion that a good extraction should not look like the spray from a shower head.

Some folks think the chrome plating adds a metallic taste to the shot, with a bottomless, that is not an issue. I have de-chromed the inside of my spouted PF.

I have seen a few complaints about the plating peeling off around the cut bottom edges. However I believe most of them were home made.

I still like 'fully plated', nice buzzword; it gets your attention and gives the product a standout phrase.

hmmm... 'tis fully plated indicating that it was plated after all cutting & machining. I just wish that machining was a little more "aggressive", i.e. that the sharp edges were removed. Now, with grandkids on the way, it is another thing to watch out for as in: "Hey, stop playing with that PF before you cut your finger off!!!"

We do too... That is just how these particular parts are arriving from Italy. Maybe "they" are following this thread.

Thanks for "feeling my pain", Dave.

I wonder...have any of you tried to buff out (hmmm...this probably means GRIND off) those rough edges on the new OEM crotchless form Espresso Parts? Is it possible to do without taking off the plating?
