FWIW my first experience with Grindz was excellent.

I had not cleaned my grinder (a Nuova Simonelli MCF) in the two years since I bought it, and the burrs looked much like Dan's photos on a related thread. Grinder hygeine obviously has not been on the top of my list, but it will be from now on! I used Grindz as directed and the burrs turned out clean. Darned clean.

Was very surprised to see that my ground coffee is in fact "fluffier" after the cleaning, as Dan (I think) mentioned. Required significant adjustment to get good shots post-cleaning. I suppose clean burrs cut and gummed burrs mash, but am just supposing.

As I have never cleaned my grinder with anything I have no idea if Grindz works better than minute rice, but I can say without a doubt that it works! And I am always reluctant to buy minute rice anyway, out of fear that I might actually cook and serve it...

While the Minute Rice I have is strictly dedicated to grinder cleaning duties and have Basmati, Jasmine & Black rice on hand for cooking, I'd be less concerned about serving minute rice than coffee ground in a grinder than hadn't been cleaned to two months let alone two years. But that's just me. But then I do things like clean my cutlery after each use. Even clean them during a cooking prep session if using same knife to cut/slice/chop different things.

Haven't really figured out a good way for a quantative Grindz versus Minute Rice comparison. Both seem to do the same good job cleaning the burrs and flushing the grinds path. What definitely surprised me was the Grindz tend to have more static cling and harder to clean out than the Minute Rice, I expected it to be the other way around. That said I'll continue using the Grindz while the supply lasts, the price was right! When gone I'll go back to Minute Rice. To alleviate concerns of accidentally cooking Minute Rice, I plan to put it in the Grindz container when empty!

Mike: So, out of curiosity, since you have now used Grindz and Minute Rice, by volume does it take more Grindz or Minute Rice to clean the grinder, and to the extent you can estimate, which is more cost effective?

By volume I used the same amount, appeared to do the same job. Cost of a large box of Minute Rice (42oz) $4.69 at Safeway, Grindz $26.50 at SM...

I don't know which would be more effective on a really dirty grinder because mine has never gotten that way. Been using Minute Rice routinely for years combined with periodic take apart cleanings. But for weekly or so cleanings there is no question in my mind which product I'll continue to use long term.

Hey guys, back from Perth, where Corey and the team at Core treated me to a couple of shifts play on their hotrodded lineas and, of course, great coffee. I've posted an entry for this as a separate thread on cleanliness, but for the meantime, enjoy these pictures of Corey pampering me on his home setup ... because I certainly enjoyed the results!

I agree Jon! So rather than wait for a third entry, it seems appropriate to end the contest on a final entry about keeping it clean. Congratulations luca, you are the sixth and final Grindz Grinder Cleaner winner! Please contact Charles McAlpin to claim your prize.

Thanks everyone for entering and many thanks to Josh Dick and Charles McAlpin for sponsoring our Urnex giveaway!

Yep, if I had some Grindz, that would be the first thing that I would do...

It's been about a month... How did your go Grindz test go?

Sorry for the delay - I have been trying to win some minute rice but so far no luck :).

Actually, I have been loving the Grindz. I was shocked how much crud it pulled out of my grinder, and surprised that I could actually see a shine on the burrs for the first time...ever (never noticed it when the grinder was new). A quick wipe with a paper towel, and the doser also comes out clean.

I brought some over to a buddy's place who uses a Rocky doserless, and it did a great job on his Rocky.

I now run Grindz through my grinder once a week. I guess I'll pick up some minute rice next time I'm at the grocery store and find out once and for all if it is just as thorough a cleaner (that's ready in 5 minutes!).

Might I suggest a few suggestions about cleaning betweens Grindz cleanings? I just got to the point on my Mazzer where it really needs to be cleaned, and I'm about to embark on taking it down (half to clean it, half because I have a technical toy and I have to look inside) to clean it out. Post cleaning hints!

OK, in the form of an appropriate suggestion:

The thread Cleaning a Mazzer Mini has instructions and pictures. Is that what you meant?

Sure, but since the suggestion was made that the posts here be tips, the only tip I felt comfortable bringing to this group was that they might give us nuggets of wisdom about cleaning grinders and the next post about not preaching in someone else's church. The 'How to' is a great step-by-step, but I was thinking of the things that don't tend to get mentioned. Like the 'put your lug nuts in the hubcap' trick for changing a tire so as not to lose them, and the 'take a nut from each of the other wheels' trick for when you don't listen to the first one.
The link is perfect, if it applies just as well to the SJ badged as an Astoria.

I had mixed experience with Grindz, but any problems I had were mainly to do with my setup. I use a Mazzer Mini E doserless. After using Grindz I had to do a fair bit of cleaning to eliminate the yellow residue. I have never had a problem with static holding coffee in the cone of the Mini E, but the Grindz residue was prone to clinging to the cone. It seems very light and clings to everything, which I suppose is how it cleans the burrs.

The job of cleaning the burrs was done admirably no question, but I found I spent quite some time cleaning up the yellow Grindz residue. As previously mentioned, I think a lot of my cleaning woes were due to my grinder being doserless, although I assume Grindz would hang up in dosing chambers too.

If you don't have the time or inclination to pull down the burrs of your grinder and thoroughly clean them, then Grindz is a great alternative. In fact Grindz ability to absorb oils would do a better job than my usual stiff brush cleaning of burrs. For my purposes what I think I will do is use Grindz in conjunction with the complete removal and cleaning of the burr sets.
