well i was at sears buying a sprinkler and found this:

Fluke 2-In-1 Infrared & Contact Thermometer - $149

it takes a normal type K thermocouple plug so i can use it with my erics adaptor.

it also has the infra read/laser reading. you pull the trigger and it tells you the temp.

you can measure with both the probe and the infra red, simultaneously. this allows me to actually see the temp of the water in the brew path with the TC and coming out the screen, or in the cup with the infra red at the same time.

i can pull a shot and see its temp.

one thing that was interesting and maybe for the titan grinder project. in the mazzer mini, the beans just sitting in the chute from this afternoon were 80° degrees. i ground some beans (they were 79° in the jar) and they came out at an astounding 84°. the temp was all over and peaked at 92° during the grind but im calling it 84°, because this is what they read when the grinding stopped. thinking about a video to illustrate this phenomenon.

kind of fun to point it at the group head or the cups in the cup warmer. it has different setting for adjust to shiny objects.

if the wife says you cant have one more toy for coffee try these other helpful uses: can point it at a frying pan to see its temp, at the AC vents, all have varying temps of air coming out, hot spots on the wall. a guy in a forum said he found shorts or crossed wires in his electric sockets because some were 10° hotter. fun to annoy the dog if you point it at its butt or paw (careful to not shoot its eye with the laser)

the package came with a continuity tester. great to keep from shocking yourself. you put it next to a wire and it can tell if there is power going through it. kind of cool also.

this is probably not that interesting for some but i had a fun day.

cheers.

Actually, thanks for the link to this. I've been looking to get a digital thermometer for monitoring roasts and this one would probably work well for that. Plus I could measure post-roast cool down temps with the infrared reader. I guess it would not work with a scace though (type T needed for that right?).

It is fun and useful, just be careful to verify the infrared temperatures with a regular thermocouple. The infrared readings are only as good as your emissivity adjustment. If you don't have the emissivity correct the infrared results can be off considerably.
