For many of us, the superior dry processed coffees from last year's Ecafe auction were the coffee drinking highlights of the year. So it's good news that some of our favorite roasters have picked up lots for our delectation this year.

There's also some ominous news for us, good news for the farmers: many of the choice DP lots were bought by Japanese specialty roasters. In the past, they were the ultimate clean freaks, and wouldn't touch DP with a ten foot pole. Perhaps they've come to the same conclusion I did when cupping these coffees, that screen dried DP is a new category of processing that is just as clean as the best wet processing technique. Since they are also willing to pay top dollar for their coffee, it means we'll soon be paying more for these gems, and that the farmers will be adequately compensated for the care that goes into these lots.

In any case: you can see the "score-sheet" for yourselves:
http://auction.stoneworks.com/includes/ecafe2006/final_results.html

"U" in the first "item" column designates dry process, "W" wet process. Click on the coffees name in the description column to get its cupping report.

My congratulations to Green Mountain, Dallis, Caffe Pronto, Paradise, Nuovo, Barefoot, Groundwork, Kean, Koffee Klatsch, and Sacred Grounds for buying these coffees.

Peter G got a wet processed Yrg, but none of the dps.

It was amazing how much more interest there was in this auction this year.

To be honest, I was a little disappointed in the DPs. There were some great coffees, but given the events of the recent year, I expected the prep to be somewhat better. The good news is, the incredible Indido Misty Valley, which I consider to be the apotheosis of this type, will be available again this year. My favorite in the auction was the Shanta Golba Sidamo, but I learned quickly that there was another committed buyer on the other end (turned out to be Green Mountain) and I let 'em have it...

Jim, did you taste 'em? What was your favorite?

I'm still scrounging for sample leftovers; I should get some over the next weeks, then I'll post my list of ones to look out for (or maybe not, if it's really short  ).

Of course, there were apparently some delays and disappointments twixt auction and reception last year; I wonder if that's kept the prices relatively low this year?

I'm surprised to see the Bale Kara finished 11th & 13th. Hah, I thought after last year's stellar performance they will at least keep a respectable place at the top. What happened there? I don't mind paying higher price for quality, but when the Japanese end up with the entire lot, we will never get a whiff of it. Years ago, when JBM was not a myth, they ended up buying the best lots for decades. Man, these guys are the locust of coffee.
