Sorry I didn't see your post earlier.
The burr is only held in place by screws, though it can stick pretty well to the carrier. A few gentle taps with a wooden mallet does wonders. As for the bottom burr screws, I apply my experience with stubborn screws on motorcycles... I use an impact screwdriver and have never failed to remove the most #*@!?! screw. You can get one at any car parts supply store; a quick tap on the end of the screwdriver with a hammer produces a quick 1/8th turn. To hold the bottom carrier steady, I gently press against the gap between the burr and the housing using a flat screwdriver blade.
NOTE: If you aren't comfortable doing this, I suggest you enlist a handyman or auto mechanic. They would have it out in two minutes without nicking the screw. There is the risk of stripping the screw's head, which would be a pain to drill out. So again, I advise this approach only if you (or your husband) are confident using tools.
