Greetings from Durham, NC:

When this naturally sundried crop from Biloya, Ethiopia, first arrived at Counter Culture Coffee from our producer-partner Abdullah Bagersh, the drip version of Biloya Sundried Natural knocked us out with its complex fruitiness—marked by flavors of melon, passionfruit, mango, strawberry, and blueberry with plenty of chocolate.

Before long, and true to the spirit of adventure that drives CCC's coffee exploration, the roasting department couldn't resist roasting the green beans for espresso. Biloya Sundried Espresso has since become such a grassroots phenomenon—including being used by our own Katie Carguilo for all three "courses" in her third place finish at the Northeast Regional Barista Competition—that we decided to make it available on our website while supplies last!

Deep, profoundly sweet notes of blueberry, raspberry, chocolate, and spice highlight Biloya Sundried Espresso. Our roasting department recommends starting with 18.5 grams at 200 degrees for a perfect balance of dark chocolate and fruit. Then, of course, adjust to your palate.

This intriguing SOE will only be available for a matter of weeks, btw; please see the H-B Third Anniversary promo for a special offer.

Best,
Nathan

I pulled several of Counter Culture's Biloya espressos today. Grapefruit and black raspberries with lots of flavor and aroma. You'll know it's Biloya the moment the fragrance wafts from the grinder. I've developed a taste for brighter coffees and the Biloya delivers without the lemon pucker (think "bracing acidity"). If that's not your thing, try bumping up the brew temperature two degrees, or better yet, serve it as an Americano.

Got to try it last night and this morning, and I think it may replace Finca Mauritania as my favorite. The blueberry was a real surprise.

I was able to snag a free bag of the Biloya (thanks CCC!) which just arrived this afternoon. It is brilliant. Really really good. The blueberry/raspberry flavor and aroma are very refreshing. I like a bright single origin every now and then, especially one that avoids the "lemon pucker" Dan mentioned by finishing sweet and syrupy. It reminds me of the Sidamo Amaro from Cuvee Coffee. I was kind of surprised by how small the beans are, almost small enough to slide through the conical set on the Cimbali Max Hybrid.

I was tasting a ripe black cherry flavor although I still don't consider myself as having the ability to easily taste and describe flavors in espresso or coffee in general. Definitely fruity and the aroma in the bag was something I haven't experienced before - very unique. To me, the aroma of the ground coffee was what I'd describe as strawberry. I only had one shot of this since it was getting late in the evening and I wanted to try a shot of the Idido Misty Valley that I ordered from CCC. Both are outstanding and I couldn't ask for more from a roaster (first time having their coffee at home), especially the fact that they offered a bonus for those that ordered early for the anniversary celebration.

Greetings from Durham, NC,

We have four bags of Biloya Sundried Espresso to give away for HB3. We had a brief flood of eligible orders in the first few hours of the HB3 promo last Friday ... perhaps folks thought these would be gone and didn't want to risk not getting one? It's an interesting SOE, for sure. Plus, you get $4 off by using the HB3 coupon.

Also, because we started roasting Biloya Sundried Espresso every day (for the next few weeks, at least, while we have green beans left), we're sending out HB3 orders with the FREE 12 oz. bag of Biloya Sundried Espresso as they came in rather than holding them for next week.

Anyhow, just thought I'd let you know.

Thanks,
Nathan

Taste-o-rama!

And the aromas! It blows me away how great it smells, and how differently so, in each of its forms: the beans when opening the package, the freshly ground coffee, the shot once pulled--even the remaining dried crema in an emptied cup. I love the range of notes that emerge across the progression.

Nathan, thanks to you and Counter Culture for a fantastic gift to help celebrate HB3. I truly appreciate it. You've made a wonderful discovery in Abdullah Bagersh and his sundried craftsmanship and have yourselves taken it to another level.

Get it while you can, folks.

The Biloya Sundried is even pretty good in milk drinks, but much better straight. I am still getting great shots even a week after receiving my bag.

I couldn't believe it when I saw the description include blueberries, but they're really there and they certainly linger. Somehow it seems like a drink of water left a chocolate taste.

There's a good chance I'm making this all up as I have no training on describing tastes. Another note: my bag is only two days post-roast. It's exam time for me and the Finca Mauritania ran out this morning leaving me with no choice but to start dialing it in a few days early. I'm really looking forward to the next few mornings of SO deliciousness!

A big thank you to Nathan and Counter Culture for the great HB3 giveaway! I was planning to try out another blend next but I might end up re-ordering this. We'll see how the next two weeks go.

Not sure if this is the same lot that I had a lot of fun with on my East Coast tour - but espressos like this are really exciting, interesting and oddly approachable.
