Can't remove brass carrier for bottom burr in Cimbali Cadet

Grinders are one of the keys to exceptional espresso. Discuss them here.

Thanks everyone in the quick identification of my new used Cimbali Cadet. I got the top and bottom burrs out but I can't budge the center bolt that I assume hold in the brass carrier for the bottom burr. So much crud was under the burr that I really want to get this out and clean it properly... pretty please, I just can't face grinding coffee with this the way it is.

BTW: I'm suprised there is so much room in this machine for coffee to get wedged into.

I'm not sure if this is the right way to do it, but you can wedge a screwdriver in the output hole and against the sweepers on the bottom carrier and then you should be able to put some torque on the center bolt. That's what I had to do with my K30 (according to Mahlkonig's instructions too!).

Not exactly what I would have expected, a nice hole in the drive shaft or a couple of flats on them would have been simple to do and make this a whole bunch easier.

On Mazzers, the top burr carrier is actually press-fitted onto the motor shaft with 2 tons of force (if I recall correctly). I don't know if the Cimbali is like that, but you may have a devil of a time getting that thing off if that's the case. On Mazzers, that bolt on the top of the carrier only serves to cover up the threaded hole that they use to fix the press onto the carrier.

For your sake, I hope that they aren't press-fitted. :)

Ack, press fit.... here's hoping it's not the case. Otherwise it would be a Grindz challenge. :!:

If the burr spins clockwise, it's possible the thread is LEFT hand.

FYI, I have never removed the lower carrier from any of my Cimbali grinders. I did do a tear down on one of my Max grinders (used, in similar dirty shape Reviving an Abused Cimbali Max) and did not remove the carrier. I brushed it out, blew it out with the air compressor and wiped it out with a damp and slightly soapy towel.

Just broke off two of the three sweeping arms. :( I didn't notice I had broken the first one, otherwise I would not have tried again. I don't recommend using the sweeping arms as a leverage point. Time to clean it as best I can in place unless the Cimbali representative on the forum could offer an opinion?

Forgot I had started this thread. The brass carrier can be removed by turning the bolt clockwise.

The edge of it.

What was surprising is the aluminium housing is pretty clean.

I go with the site sponsors listed on the Resources page under Commerce. Not just because they're sponsors, but because they've demonstrated their commitment to the espresso community at large.
