Sounds good but don't be surprised if you end up taking Barry's original advice re some teflon tape and a standard brass NPT adaptor available from your local hardware store. The reason being that male BSPP threads usually have a truncated cone end to seal on the end with a mirror image female fitting. So, depending upon exactly what the existing adaptor end looks like (on the "good" end), it MAY not seal properly in the new adaptor you ordered and/or will require a copper crush washer inside the new female, e.g. the elbow on Silvia that contains the OPV seals to the boiler's male 1/4" BSPP with two copper crush washers.

But Good Luck

Eric,

Yes, I've anticipated that. The BSPP end of the existing adapter is tapered for a compression fitting, and I haven't figured out yet how to resolve that. Being an rank amateur espresso machine technician is always an adventure, but what would we do in life without adventures?

Cheers,

Hi Rick - It seems to me that Barry's original idea is looking better and better.

You are absolutely, positively correct in that "adventure is the greatest part of life." Wait, I got it - Now opening in a mall nearest you, "Rick's Java Man Coffee Shop & Espresso Adaptor Emporium" :)

it's "sort of" a compression fitting, but not like you might be thinking (ferrule & cap). the bspp espresso plumbing uses what i call a "bullet nose" fitting which is hard soldered to the end of the copper tubing. a regular compression end braided hose will work, but you have to be certain you tighten that sucker down until there is absolutely no movement in the joint whatsoever.

Yep, there's a bullet-shaped "ball" in the connector to the barbed hose connector into which the existing BSPP connector attaches.

Ever tried soldering a threaded connector -- e.g. a BSPP male / NPT female?

you mean thread them together and solder? it shouldn't be a problem at all. they can even be dissimilar metals.

do you need me to make one for you?

That's very generous of you to offer! Thanks! But I think I'll give it a try myself once the adapter arrives, and see how I make out. I'll post to let you know whether it worked.

Cheers,

Howdy,
this is a great reference book set.
~$2.50 each from Swagelok

I use mine all the time...well worth the investment....gives part numbers also.

I protest! I'm the king of Teflon tape, not duct tape!

The new BSPP femal to NPT male adapter arrived from McMaster Carr yesterday and I installed it.

The new adapter did not form a water-tight seal with the NPT thread on the old one because of the end details, so I soldered them together. What the hell -- solder puts lead in your pencil.

The new water line setup is:

Wega>>braided SS line supplied by Wega>>old male oddball thread/3/8" BSPP male>>solder>>new 3/8" female BSPP/3/8" male NPT>>double ended 3/8" female NPT nut>>3/8" NPT male/1/4" NPT male>>standard 1/4" braided SS line>>filter.

Thanks for all your help!
