So. I'm a bit confused, it's supposed to take 8-10 seconds for anything to come out, and then you have the remaining 22-20 seconds for the machine to pour 60ml? Or is it 30 seconds starting from the first drip?

If you pre-infuse, should it still take 8-10 seconds for anything to come out? or should the time be less?

This is a farily n00b question. Please phrase the answer for n00bs.

Sincerely,

Pour time starts when the pump is engaged. E61s bead in 5-7 seconds (bottomless); the first drips of spouted portafilters start in 8-10 seconds. The overall pour time varies from 25-30 seconds. Add 5-10 seconds for ristrettos.

and on to say that:

Seriously, the timing rule isn't all that great. Moreover, it's more like 25 to 30 seconds, not 20 to 25.

Thanks, I appreciate the help. btw.. is there a forum search feature? It would stop me from asking too many n00b questions...'Cause... I don't see one... but of course, I'm known to be blind when it comes to finding things...

Sure, it's at the top of every page (look for Image Search). Besides the how-tos and resources, I elaborated on some other site aids you may find useful:

HB wrote:One of the goals of this site is to "raise the discussion level." That requires a certain common knowledge so everyone can participate fully, or available resources to acquire the required knowledge. Articles are formal documentation of the knowledge that is frequently discussed in the forums, but they require considerable effort to write, copyedit, and publish. So I looked for ways of leveraging the building knowledge base in the forums. A few of these ideas are complete:
  • Related topics to encourage more in-depth reading and revive past discussions
  • FAQs and Favorites forum collects the best of the best to encourage "self service" reading; the related topics automatic search takes advantage of these vetted topics to present a few (hopefully) relevant matches in each set of related topics
  • Search has been highly optimized for speed and enhanced to recognize common espresso-related abbreviations and synonyms. Although we rely on the board's native search today, it won't scale over time, so I've already enabled Google Search in the site's search. If someday the board's search is too slow, it will be easy to switch and (hopefully) still get the same quality search results.

The Recommended Reading covers close to everything from the newbie to intermediate barista level.
