A better cappa cup ... from Intelly

I thought my Bodum Pavina "cappuccino cups" were great, because they are beautiful and retain heat. But, Bodum calls them "tumblers," and, at 9 oz., that is really a more accurate description.

Last week a friend gave us two Intelligentsia cappuccino sets.

My first thought was "Gee, those look awfully small." But, in fact they were just right. At 4-3/4 oz., they forced me to use proportions of espresso and foam that vastly improved my drinks (not to mention my latte art). I think the shape helps, too.

So, once again, it is never too late to learn new tricks. My "cappas" were really bad lattes. BTW, I have no idea whether this shape and size is exclusive to Intelligentsia. I was just impressed by what an improvement it made over my previous cups.

Marshall,

I have the same cup with the old black cat logo.
Hands down the best size for cappucini.
My latte art, however, is severely lacking.
Love the cups, though.

Marshall,

That is a great cup and the only "proper" cappuccino cup that I have. Some may argue that you should be putting a single shot in that cup, but I go for a double myself. I also like the simple logo and the printed saucer in contrasting grey.

If you like that cup, the Intelly espresso demitasse and macchiato cups are also very nice. I have several of the demitasses and I gave the macchiato cups to my brother as a gift.. he loves 'em. The macchiato cups are a "squat" tulip and different from other ACF macchiato cups that I have which are more bowl shaped.

 Not fair...These cups have been sold out for two weeks and the folks at Intelligentsia (As of 01-14-2008) said it would be another three weeks before a stock replenishment arrives. You have some very nice friends that know how to gift! Enjoy.

Do you put a double or single in it for a cappuccino? It seems rather small at 4-3/4 oz.

I have been reducing the proportion of milk in my caps but still is a 7 oz drink. Gotta try out the smaller portion. 8)

BTW, does Intelligentsia serve their cappuccinos in these cups with a double shot? I have never been to an Intelligentsia shop.

What volume do you shoot for with your double?

I really don't shoot for any volume, but at most my doubles sometimes hit 2 ounces with crema. Typically 1.5-1.75 ounces I'd guess from approximately 16 grams. I haven't measure my brew ratios in quite awhile, but I used to be right near 50% all the time. I think I may have gravitated to slightly higher ratios.

I use 5 and 6 ounce cups for my cappuccino's. I use my Bodum Pavina for tea. I have a nice set of Elektra 3oz cups that make nice macchiato drinks or a single shot cappa.

I stopped at Intelly's Millenium Park location when I was in Chicago last weekend. I was interested in purchasing some of their cappuccino cups after reading this thread. Unfortunately, they are being redesigned. The PBTC had no idea when they would be available or what the change would entail. The website also lists them as unavailable.

I'll keep checking their website and try to post when I see they are back.

I spoke with Jim Allen (Hope I got the name correct) in web sales at Intelligentsia last Thursday (Jan. 31st) about the cappa cups. He said that the shipment has been delayed another month. He also mentioned that he didn't know what the delay was for. :x :x

If there -is- a redesign I hope they're not going to plaster a name brand logo across the front. It's already perfect in it's understated way.

Mr. Marshall, I'm ready to start bidding if you're ready to sell.

These are on the shelve.
Very good price for 58mm Reg Barber, SS flat base, tall rosewood with Intelligentsia logo ($55.00) tamper. They don't carry 53mm!

They are both ACF cups.

Tulip shaped one --> model (46/66/106) here you can download pdf showing espresso/cappa/latte sizes (weight, height, diameter etc) of that model: http://www.acf.it/pdf/46.pdf

Bowl shaped one --> model (2bis/52/102) http://www.acf.it/pdf/2bis.pdf

I ordered some beans, the espresso cup, and the macchiato size. It was delivered on the 19th. The espresso cup was showing it was not back ordered but did not come. I phoned and the lady said it is not available now. The new redesign will be in in about a month. Apparently it has been a hold up for a while. So for people with the old design, congrats, and the new design will be out soon. I will have both soon enough.

Wow! I was just at the Silver Lake Intelli a couple of weeks ago and asked for the price of the tamper and I was quoted $8x.xx. If it was @ 55 I would have purchased.

I went there intending on buying some cappuccino/latte cups also but there were none - only espresso and macchiatto's. Of course, I ended up buying some Black Cat, Kid-O and Decaf El Mago.

BTW, the Decaf El Mago is awesome. Flavor notes indicate dark chocolate (yes), pear (can't make it out), and red apple (yumm).

Well, I've never really considered myself a cup collector, but based on this thread, I guess I'll have to get one of the new Intelly espresso cups when they arrive. The ones I have are usually among the first ones dirty.

Sorry to hear that! but it has been that prince for months ! ( on / off stock).
Most of the time, I'm sitting right at that spot. Infact, for 3 weeks in a row I were there ( but didn't check it out)
Last week alone one time with my wife, second time with my wife and my mother in law. After my wife first sipped her latte, she said :"too bad! they're not close to our home!"
I love her for "my spending freely lately" and be willing going out 2 times up there.

It's still raining and I love (walking) in the rain to coffee shop, who know I'll be there again before she's waking up and yelling :
-Where are you? honey
-In the coffee shop

I know this is an old thread, but I stumbled across it while looking for info about suitable cappa cups. You might like to know that Bodum makes a 5oz double walled "Tea" cup that would probably do nicely for those partial to that style.

Here's a link:
http://www.bodumusa.com/shop/line.asp?MD=1&GID=30&LID=489&HID=10581%2D10&CHK=&SLT=&mscssid=HBWDHN24PRDT9P5BG5H4L6QD1TCUBS67

I'm thinking about getting 4 of them, as my big hands will likely work better with them than with the tiny handles found on traditional 4-6oz cups. I also like the idea of being able to see the drink through the clear sides.

So far I haven't been able to find it for sale anywhere other than at Bodum's web site.
