Not to be outdone by the N.Y. Times, the L.A. Times gives coffee its full due today. Practically the whole 10-page Wednesday Food section is -- ta-da -- coffee! Tellingly, its title is Special Issue/Beyond Latte. They are getting out the word there is more to coffee than a hot milkshake.

Some of it is focused on the L.A. scene (best shops and roasters, L.A. coffee history). But much is not local. In the cover story, Russ Parsons writes about an espresso hound learning to make a cup of coffee (some of us met Russ at the first SCAA Homecoming).

Gorgeous photos, too. The cover is a vertical half page of coffee brewing in a Chemex. Pix of Mireya and Chuck Jones in Pasadena, Mark Wain at Caffe Luxxe. A whole article on vac pots. A nice story on decaf, with quotes from Peter Giuliano, Jeff Chean, Chuck Jones and other coffee notables. Coffee recipes for cocktails, main dishes and desserts. Definitely worth picking up a hard copy, even for out of towners.

If you're religiously opposed to registration, some articles are available without: http://www.calendarlive.com/dining/cl-fo-find25oct25,1,1853199.story?coll=la-headlines-food.

This is one of those newspaper sections you can show your friends who've lately been in doubt of your sanity. :D

Marshall,
Great article! Now if The Dallas Morning News follows suit we'll know for sure that coffee has arrived everywhere!
I wasn't born in Texas, but got here as fast as I could!

L.a. times feature

thanks marshall for the tip to this excellent feature.

i noticed one error in the time line.

the writer has harry palmer using a chemex in the film "the ipcress file." harry's coffee brewer was not a chemex but an insta-brewer: an american made press pot that goes back at least to the late fifties. harry's gourmet interests are mentioned at several points in the film. apparantly it worked as he was able to get sue lloyd to come over for dinner...
