Hi,
just got a new, very amateurish machine (branded Izzy LaCrema).
It came out excellent in all aspects but the portafilter.
I was wondering, are the portafilter dimensions somehow standardized?
Mine is 70mm on the outside, 4mm thick and is supposed to be for two cups.
It also has another one, for one cup, or premeasured portions, which is a little stranger in shape (looks like a half sphere).
I am looking for a new portafilter (standard shape, one cup size) and maybe a naked to evaluate the whole thing.
The company (Izzy), a well known company here in Greece, does not offer any parts other than the supplied.
Is it possible that any of the ready made portafilters will do?
What dimensions do I need to measure? There are many possible.
I hope something is standard so I won't have to customize.
Thank you all in advance,
Jason

There are common portafilter sizes and common basket sizes (e.g., 58mm), but no, there really isn't a standard. The grouphead geometry changes considerably among espresso machines. For example, the diameter of the basket / portafilter bowl, depth, position and number of flanges ("ears" of the portafilter), even the angle of the slot cut into the grouphead that the portafilter flanges engage is difference.

I'm not familiar with your machine and a quick search turned up no matches, but generally speaking, you can modify an existing portafilter to make it bottomless without a lot of difficulty. If you want a different basket, then the only choice is sourcing a replacement from an espresso parts retailer.

And what about those "will fit most commercial machines" portafilters?
When they say 58mm do they mean internal or external diameter?
I went to the store and the only machines with around 58mm external diameter portafilter were the really cheap ones. So I believe it is the internal diameter I should measure...
Maybe the diameter of the basket?
If I just get a less deep basket, to accommodate one cup dose, will it work correctly with all that empty space below? Or will most of the coffee stay in there?
The basket I have it the type that has one hole on the bottom. Is it any good? Never had that kind before.
What if I get a basket with a funnel like bottom (like the ones used for pods)?
thanks again...

58mm is the approximate internal diameter of the portafilter basket.

So 70mm might be about right for the typical outside diameter of the portafilter basket holder or handle.

If you can, please post a pic of the machine in question. That might help answer a few questions.

Also, please update your profile so that other HBer's will know at a glance that you are in Greece. That helps in giving advice as to vendors etc. (And welcome to HB!)

(BTW - Izzo has JUST come available as a manufacturer in the US with the Izzo Alex II from site sponsor Chris' Coffee.. EDIT - Is your machine an Izzy or Izzo?)

Photos of filters

Thank you for being so helpful...
I am not home but I have the portafilter with me (trying it on a friend's machine to see how it fits).
Well it fits perfectly. And his machine is an Illy branded machine (trying to figure out the actual manufacturer) designed for pods.
Here are the portafilters:

The one on the right has this black kind of valve, probably needed when using pods, I don't know. I know it doesn't work with straight coffee.
Maybe removing the valve makes it usable, but the basket still looks a little small.

Anyway, since his machine looks different brand than mine and portafilters are interchangeable it means I can hope to finding a replacement portafilter... I think...

Also if I can find a single portion basket for the other portafilter, and use it just by removing the valve, I am even better since this is cheap and readily available.
Any advice is greatly appreciated.
