Anyone familiar with the Rancilio Rialto? Going from Gaggia Coffee to Rialto...worth it?

Need advice about equipment or want to share your latest discovery?

I have a lead on a used Rancilio Rialto and am considering selling my Gaggia Coffee. Anyone familiar with this machine? It is said to have the same internals as the Silvia (and will accept the new adjustable OPV).

I also have read that it doesn't have a temperature ready indicator light. I don't think that would be problem as I could attach a thermocouple probe to the side of the boiler to at least give me a temperature reference point...right?

What I like (pros):

I could score the Rialto for far less that what Silvias go for and have the same internals.
Better temperature stability than my Gaggia Coffee due to larger boiler?
3-way solenoid valve (nice addition but not needed in my opinion) Gaggia doesn't have one
Uses same attachments (58mm portafilters) and internal replacement parts as Silvia
$200 price tag (not bad since Silvias go for nearly twice that on ebay, more or less what my Gaggia is probably worth (with extras)
Looks nice, I've seen photos of both exterior and interior. Visually in excellent shape, no noticeable signs of leaks or drips
buying from a fellow "coffeegeek"

What worries me (cons):

No indicator light would make this a little tricky to use if I couldn't use a thermocouple
Older machine, but like I say it looks nice
Lack of general knowledge about the machine (this is where you come in)

Thoughts?

Tim-

Here's a hack to add an indicator light - http://scumby.com/~wes/rancilio/index.htm

Looks to be a good machine.... Silvia boiler, and the old style OPV. I think you could PID it for pretty cheap too. The FUJI PID is down to $75 for a new one on eBay and you can find other high quality used or new Chinese ones for significantly less. SSR's are also cheap on eBay.

I'm a little unclear what portafilter it includes... is it an older style 58mm in your pics?

It's a fairly lateral move but some goodies such as the 3-way and OPV as you say and all the Silvia mods and performance data out there.

I have no first-hand experience with the Rialto, but I remember hearing that it might have a teflon-coated boiler and portafilter ...
Here is one pointer:

Do you believe the Rialto or Silvia for that matter are significantly better than your current rig in terms of espresso quality? I don't. Personally I don't recommend upgrading laterally and that's why I still have La Valentina. I haven't found another espresso machine that outperforms it by a wide enough margin and fits in the available space.

I also saw a few comments that indicated that the boiler and/or PF may be be Teflon lined. That can be a good or bad thing depending on your take of that situation. You don't keep parrots do you :D ?

While pretty lateral.... when I go and lay hands on the cheaper Saecos, Gaggias, Krups and even the $1000  plastic superautomatics at the kitchen superstore, I always get that "toy" feeling from them. They are very light and cheap feeling in comparison to Silvia (of course Silvia can be toy-like in comparison to other big boy HX machines). I think the Rialto has an enameled die cast frame, so it may also have that nice "weighty" feel.

I can see your points. Yeah I guess it would have been a lateral move. I was curious to just how lateral it would be.

I guess now I know!

The funny thing is that I'm not unhappy with my Gaggia per say. Sure my next machine when the Gaggia does die (or I get some new funds) will be a step up.

Look out then guys when I start shopping...

(already eyeing the Quickmill Alexia)
