Zowie Bob!! I had not heard of this before...

That puts a new slant on my machine upgrade decision process (if you know what I mean). Do you know if the bottom of the triple basket would be close to the bottom of the portafilter body so that if the portafilter was "naked" the bottom of the basket would be more visible?

One thing that has always struck me is that you have to look almost straight up into the bottomless portafilter of an S1 to see the bottom of the basket (and that would make my photography more difficult). The other thing is that I have grown to love the triple ristretto...

Lino mentioned the custom triple for the S1 and Bob's reminder sent me to the LaSpaziale S1 Forum. He's helping S1 owners with their pursuit of exceptional espresso by creating the S1 triple basket. My jaw dropped when I scrolled down this thread and saw the incredible rig he constructed to build them. If you own the La Spaziale S1, check out the reviews that are showing up on the LaSpaziale S1 Forum.

Great work Lino!

PS: On a related note, you'll hear it called "Chris' bottomless portafilter", but it's actually the Verna Original:

There's also Lino's work-in-progress, the Super Jolly doserless modification. We are discussing a little side-by-side of his modified SJ and the Mazzer Mini E. Look for an update On the Bench.

Jon,

The depth is such that it will just clear the bottom of a conventional portafilter. And, as can be seen at Dan's link, the bottom of the basket will be quite visible in a bottomless portafilter. Check out the S1 Forum as well. I think that all of our questions about the triple will be answered in the next few days.

Bob.

JonR10,

Here's a comparison of the views of the baskets thru a bottomless S1 PF.
Stock basket is in the center, which is the triple should be obvious... The little one is what the leftovers from making the triple basket make..

Pic is also shown in the S1 forum thread.

Wow, thanks lino!! I went to the S1 forum and saw how this is being done and it's amazing. You are really making a contribution to help coffee fanatics everywhere push the boundaries for espresso. 8)

Will the S1 triple basket become commercially available (like your bottomless portafilters are)? I have one of your modified (Rancilio) PF's and I always admire the craftmanship. I would more strongly consider buying an S1 (or commercial LaSpaziale) if I knew that I could get a triple basket for it... :D

Hey JonR10,

Thanks for the compliment.

Yes the intent is to make the triple baskets available "commercially". They will continue to be made is small production runs, and sold on ebay (or some similar system), as long as people want them.

It's also possible that they'll be available from Chris', but that's still unsure, and a ways off at any rate.

If demand is shown "for real", I would hope that LaSpaziale would notice and have them made available from their factory (made properly by them, not "grafted" like mine). These are a very low margin item for me, they take lots of time and two baskets to make one triple, I can't sell them for 80 bucks (they are gonna be $35), so I make very little for the amount of work.

Also I think I saw mention that Espresso Craft is looking into making ridgeless LM baskets or something. Ken Nye, that's you, right? You might consider trying to make triples for the S1 also.

ciao

I hope that I am first in line for lino's second run. $35 is a fair price considering the labor and material intensiveness of the process. I don't think that Chris or La Spaziale will be interested in offering them but things can always change.

Hey
I was away for a bit, sorry about the delayed response.

We will be making ridgeless double and triple baskets for 58mm PFs. I don't know if it will be feasible for us to make one for the S1 PF. We will be producing these baskets in large quantities to keep the costs down, so if there seems to be enough demand, we will consider making them.

BTW- We have made tampers for the S1s, they are being cut as we speak.

Be well
Ken

lino's triple basket for the S1 rocks. 22 grams - no blonding, no channeling, great taste.......

Thanks lino, buddy!
