Despite the title, the handbook applies as much to the serious home barista as the professional barista. It covers the fundamental knowledge that every successful barista must know. This article is an excerpt of the opening chapter. More...

From the introduction:

Scott Rao wrote:When I began in the coffee business fourteen years ago, I read every book I could find about coffee. After reading all of those books, however, I felt as if I hadn't learned much about how to make great coffee. My coffee library was chock-full of colorful descriptions of brewing styles, growing regions, and recipes, with a few almost-unreadable scientific books mixed in. I would have traded in all of those books for one serious, practical book with relevant information about making great coffee in a café.

Fourteen years later, I still haven't found that book. I know many other professionals as well as some obsessive nonprofessionals would like to find that same book I've been looking for. This book is my attempt to give it to them.

Yeah, I know what you mean. I admire his bravery.

Scott said he has some concern about the "internet vultures" swooping down to take potshots at what he's written. Even on this normally polite board, it happens sometimes. But he's a grown boy, and he knows that people who let their big cojones hang out sometimes get them kicked! :-)

I have Schomer's and Illy's books, so this seems like something right up my alley. Thanks for the post.

My copy arrived today. I've read the first few chapters and like what I've read. Our own John "Mr. WDT" Weiss gets several mentions. This site is mentioned in passing (note to Scott: typo "datlogger" on page 24).

Guess I'd better order a copy too. :)

Scott was gracious enough to contact me last year, and offered me the opportunity to review his paragraph on the WDT. It was a hectic time, and I'm afraid I dropped the ball. So I can only hope Mr. Rao was in a generous mood when he wrote that section...

Publishing a book implies a huge amount of work. It's a tremendous accomplishment, your own little piece of immortality. Congratulations, Scott!

Don't worry John, I think Scott has lots of respect for you and the WDT.

As you say, undoubtedly it was a huge effort, but he persevered and the book is a beauty. I think many, many people will benefit from the information and the discussions that come out of it!

I read my copy last night. I believe this book to be highly deserving of a spot on the bookshelf. It's concise, easy to read, and backed up with research. Home Barista is referenced a few times so obviously Scott know his stuff

hmmm... this is all unsettlingly polite and flattering. where are the internet vultures? are they busy taking meticulous notes before posting?
writing it was a pleasure. it took time, but compared to running a cafe i'd be hard-pressed to call it hard work.
thanks for the kind words. i'll cherish them while waiting to find out all of the mistakes i made. copies have already been mailed to the esteemed mr.'s hoffman and schulman, so it shouldn't take long.

I've ordered my copy, and I'm cursed with the inability to not see typos, so you may get a few from me too.

Best,

Hesitated ordering for a split second. But am I nuts, like cookbooks if only pick up one recipe (or tip) it'll be worth it and suspect it'll be much more valuable than a single tip. Couple copies on there way.
