The Professional Barista's Handbook

Postby bigabeano on Sun Feb 10, 2008 2:10 pm

Despite the title, the handbook applies as much to the serious home barista as the professional barista. It covers the fundamental knowledge that every successful barista must know. This article is an excerpt of the opening chapter. More...

From the introduction:

Scott Rao wrote:When I began in the coffee business fourteen years ago, I read every book I could find about coffee. After reading all of those books, however, I felt as if I hadn't learned much about how to make great coffee. My coffee library was chock-full of colorful descriptions of brewing styles, growing regions, and recipes, with a few almost-unreadable scientific books mixed in. I would have traded in all of those books for one serious, practical book with relevant information about making great coffee in a café.

Fourteen years later, I still haven't found that book. I know many other professionals as well as some obsessive nonprofessionals would like to find that same book I've been looking for. This book is my attempt to give it to them.

Yeah, I know what you mean. I admire his bravery.

Scott said he has some concern about the "internet vultures" swooping down to take potshots at what he's written. Even on this normally polite board, it happens sometimes. But he's a grown boy, and he knows that people who let their big cojones hang out sometimes get them kicked! :-)

I have Schomer's and Illy's books, so this seems like something right up my alley. Thanks for the post.

My copy arrived today. I've read the first few chapters and like what I've read. Our own John "Mr. WDT" Weiss gets several mentions. This site is mentioned in passing (note to Scott: typo "datlogger" on page 24).
